Trend alert: Graphic make-up
Coloruful and bold lines that turn make-up into art
November 20th, 2019
Bold. Unusual. Artistic. These are the characteristics of the new beauty trend that has been emerging over the last few weeks: the face is the canvas where to paint graphic signs. Playing with eye-liners and crayons the possibilities are endless.
There are those who simply follow the contours of the face and those who dare with drawings that recall the works of Saul Steinberg (as Jacquemus did some time ago) or abstract paintings, poised between Picasso and Russian Constructivism, those who are inspired by the make-up of the vintage shows of Vivienne Westwood and John Galliano, those who opt for dizziness and those for straight lines, those who evoke the ethnic makeup of African tribes such as FKA Twigs.
Isamaya Ffrench with the editorial starring Toni Garrn for I-D Magazine in winter 2014 was one of the first make-up artists to foresee the success and aesthetic potential of this style.
Now Instagram is full of girls who love to experiment with colours and imagination: from @xeirammua to @catalinahotin, from @serena_adelaide to @esantoinette.
Among the celebrities, Willow Smith is the it-girl to copy, one of the first to show off the graphic make-up in all its forms, from the easiest to the most artistic.
Lucy Boynton, Lily Rose Depp, Dove Cameron, on the other hand, give us the example of a more easy-to-wear version of the trend that focuses all on the graphic eyes. All you need to copy it is a good eye-liner better black or white and experiment with make-up.
