The best beauty looks of Paris Couture Week SS20

Paris Couture Week beauty looks? Clean and bright faces, emphasized by an ultra-flat or natural hairstyle, made special by accessories such as maxi bows and tiaras. From Chanel to Dior, Givenchy to Iris Van Herpen, the trend is sophisticated minimalism, but there are also those who dare with color. Maison Margiela brings neon lips and bizarre headwear made of vegetables to the catwalk, while Schiaparelli evokes the surrealist spirit of its founder, Elsa Schiaparelli, with sculptural jewelry used as eye shadows and leather decorations. Also interesting are the reinterpretations of 1960s cat-eye and beehive seen by Ulyana Sergeenko and Ralph & Russo.

DIOR

Maria Grazia Chiuri brought on Dior's catwalk a celebration of femininity and of the ideals of feminism. Along with the clothes, beauty and hairstyles were eye-catching. Inspired by the goddesses of ancient Greece, make-up artist Peter Philips left natural skin and lips, focusing on the eyes. He traced a double stretch of black eyeliner to the corner of the eyes, both on the upper and lower lids. Then he filled the space between these two small, minimal, graphic wings with a moistened golden eye shadow. Guido Palau opted for a loose styling, stopped by a braid at the top of the head, adorned with a tiara and a small veil.

RALPH & RUSSO

For Ralph & Russo, Sam Bryant focused on fresh and glowy make-up, made of softly colored eye shadows, the same shades as the clothes in the collection. On the lips a veil of candy pink MAC Snob lipstick. Larry King's hairstyle is a homage to 1960s beehive hair and late 80's big hair, however, many thought the look was a reference to Alicia Silverstone's character in Clueless. XXL silk bows stood out as an integral part of the hairstyle.

CHANEL

At the Grand Palais, in a set that recreated the garden of Aubazine Abbey, the orphanage where Coco Chanel and her two sisters were left by their father when they were little girls, Virginie Viard recalls the "dialogue between the hyperdecoration of haute couture and the great simplicity of that moment in Mademoiselle's life". The silhouettes are simple, linear, almost childlike. It is pure sophisticated minimalism, like the beauty look created by Lucia Pica: no mascara or lipstick, the complexion is nude, enlivened by a touch of bonne mine. On the eyelids of Vittoria Ceretti, Kaia Gerber, Gigi Hadid and the other models there is a hint of smokey eyes in shades of brown and mauve. The hair is gathered in a tidy chignon or loose in sinuous waves with a lateral gel-disciplined parting.

RONALD VAN DER KEMP

For Ronald Van Der Kemp's spring 2020 fashion show, make-up artist Sil Bruinsma was inspired by Grace Jones and "Helmut Newton's girls from the 1970s who went to clubs Le Palace in Paris". The result is glam and bold look, created with MAC products. Lips are glossy, cherry or dark burgundy; eyelids are saturated with pigment, sprinkled with electric rose and metallic hues; while on the eyes a generous layer of Extended Play mascara has been applied to the lashes. The hair has been customized to fit each model's look, alternating natural styling, loose waves, short cuts, fringes and crop.

MAISON MARGIELA ARTISANAL

Maison Margiela's beauty is a vibrant overload of color, inspired by Edward Hopper's paintings. Pat McGrath opted, as usual, for perfect, luminous skin, focused on the lips. From yellow to orange, fuchsia to blue, lime green to plum, the lipsticks have rainbow shades and a soft, almost powdery finish. Headwear completes the pop effect. The hair has a wet look made unique by very special veils and cloches, made of neon-painted cabbage leaves, with mini carrots and green beans arranged like decorative feathers.

IRIS VAN HERPEN

Iris Van Herpen continues to combine technology and art, bringing to the catwalk a collection inspired "by the sensory processes that occur between the intricate composition of the human body, which is reflected in the fibrous marine ecology of our oceans". For the designer's aquatic creatures, Chiao Li Hsu blended custom shades from MAC's Paintstick x 12 palette, creating distinctive graphic contours on eyes and eyebrows. An ethereal look emphasized by the hairstyles of Martin Cullen and Björn Axén. The two evoked the spirit of Medusa by creating sculptural, glossy locks rolled and pinned on the head with hairpins.

ULYANA SERGEENKO

Ulyana Sergeenko pays tribute to Shirley MacLaine's character in What a way to go, which in turn was inspired by Countess Mona von Bismarck. The hairstyles, 1960s beehive, embellished with huge bows and glittering tiaras, but also the make-up, reproduce the looks of the film. Indispensable is the eyeliner, black or white, to create doll eyes with great scenic effect. Lacquered red and antique pink alternate on the lips.
