What is (and how does it work) Sandwich Skincare
A layering technique used in the Korean beauty routine
March 7th, 2022
The latest skincare trend comes once again from Korea (and also from TikTok) and promises moisturized and radiant-looking skin that combats the annoying dryness caused by low temperatures in this period. We are talking about sandwich skincare, or moisture sandwiching, and it works by deeply moisturizing the dermis. But how? Well, it seems that all we need to do is change the way we apply the cosmetics that make up our beauty routine, starting with wet skin because - hear, hear - this is the fundamental step in the whole process.

The idea behind this new skincare is based on the fact that - according to some studies conducted - when the skin is wet, it is much more receptive and therefore more willing to receive all the benefits of the active ingredients in the formulations of the cosmetics we use. This is a truly valuable discovery, especially for the change of season, one of those times of the year when the skin needs as much hydration as possible. The still cold temperatures and the wind are notorious antagonists to a healthy-looking and soft-touch complexion. The hydrolipidic film, which has the task of protecting the dermis, suffers the stress caused by these factors. The result is the unpleasant sensation of skin tightness, irritating flakes that can even turn into small lesions and an uneven complexion.
But how does sandwich skincare work? Product application is based on the three-second rule, a process in which you apply your skincare products just three seconds after washing your face without letting it dry out in between. After washing your face, don't dry it out and - taking care to allow less than three seconds - start applying your daily products to your damp skin. Start with the lighter products such as serum, continue with the eye contour and finally apply the heavier textures such as face cream. All you need to do now is wait for the skin to dry. Alternatively - if you have sensitive skin - you can wash your face, dry it and then spray a layer of thermal water on it before proceeding with the next steps. The main aim is to "trap water" in the skin and reduce water loss during the day.

The benefits of "sandwich" moisturization come from allowing the active ingredients to be absorbed deep into the skin and promotes prolonged hydration of the epidermis. When the skin is moistened by cleansing or exfoliation and is followed by the application of active ingredients and moisturizing products, this seals in moisture and helps to encapsulate the benefits of each formulation. The process works particularly well when using a hyaluronic acid serum as it attracts water and retains it, with each molecule in the active able to retain up to 1,000 times its weight in moisture.
