Is Face Taping really dangerous?
Popular on TikTok, what is the natural lifting effect beauty trend and how does it work?
March 29th, 2022
These days it seems there's always a new viral beauty trend on TikTok, and the recent hack of the face tape for a natural lifting effect seems to be causing (not a little) stir. Originating in Russia and soon spreading to South Korea, Face Taping is now becoming increasingly popular in Europe and Italy too, becoming the new anti-wrinkle facial gymnastics derived, in particular, from the Japanese technique of Kinesio Taping. This is a non-invasive aesthetic process that is carried out by applying elastic tapes, i.e. colored cotton tapes with an adhesive side, to certain strategic points on the face to improve blood and lymphatic circulation and to facilitate muscular functions. The tapes do not contain anything in particular, no serum or anti-aging cream, but act thanks to the mechanical pumping action they apply to the blood and lymphatic system. It is a similar concept to having a ponytail - high and tight - that pulls the face back and the result is an immediate anti-aging effect because it helps to relax, tone and drain the tissues.
We can also call it a sort of gym for the skin. There are more than 70 muscles between the face and neck and we often use them in the wrong way. The result? There are areas of the face that are contracted and others that lose tone. Taping, when applied correctly and with the right tension, gives the skin tissues a workout. In fact, even after the first session, the skin improves visibly and the complexion becomes less dull, yellowish or grey. However, this wow effect will fade after a few days. Just like a body that trains constantly in the gym, this treatment needs to be repeated consistently over time. It is particularly suitable for mature and scarred skin, but also for younger skin that tends to accumulate swelling and tension on the face, resulting in a brighter, firmer and more relaxed complexion.

But is it really safe for the skin? While it's true that Face Taping gives that coveted Bella Hadid look, it's best to proceed with caution as the adhesive material can cause damage to the skin (also considering that the tapes need to be left on for about 8 to 10 hours). With prolonged use, the skin can become redder, drier, scaly and itchy where the tape has been placed. In addition, the constant use of facial tapes can also cause allergies as many of them have irritating adhesives.
In conclusion, taping is a method that should always be applied by a professional. In the case of face taping, as it works on relatively small muscle fibers, it can also be taught to the patient after an initial acquaintance meeting, but it is always better to consult a specialist before proceeding with DIY in order to avoid unpleasant side effects.
