Everything, but also everything you need to know to be sun-kissed in a healthy way
May 25th, 2023
Now that summer is finally here, we can plan the long-awaited time of stretching out on a sunbed and tanning in the sun. But be careful, because to reap the full benefits we need to be aware and take the right precautions. There is no longer any excuse to ignore the information circulating on the subject - from exposure to the products to use. Let us start with the positive: The sun works wonders! It improves mood by stimulating the neuroendocrine system and increasing the production of serotonin, the neurotransmitter responsible for our mental well-being; it relieves muscle contractures and has a relaxing effect on many inflammatory conditions. It is a valuable ally for the skin and, when used correctly, helps treat psoriasis, eczema and even acne. It also helps control weight by increasing serotonin, which seems to reduce appetite. But that's not all: the sun is also our main source of vitamin D, which is essential for the body's well-being.
But how and how often should we expose ourselves to the sun to get these benefits? According to experts, we should do so whenever we feel the need, preferably in the morning and late afternoon, avoiding the hottest hours of the day. It is not necessary to be constantly exposed to the sun to produce the amount of vitamin D our bodies need: 15-20 minutes a day for at least 4 days a week is sufficient. However, unprotected sunbathing can do serious damage to our skin. UV rays penetrate the dermis and can damage the DNA of skin cells. Most of this damage is repaired, but sometimes it can lead to the death of the cells themselves or even turn them into cancer cells. In the long run, the sun causes degeneration of elastin and collagen, the two proteins that give skin support and elasticity. So besides wrinkles and blemishes, excessive sun exposure can also cause visible and internal damage to the body. So if you are a true sun worshipper, be sure to have your trusty sunscreen on hand. Thank you to the latest developments in cosmetic technology, sunscreens are no longer pasty, but pleasant like a caress.
First, there's the sun mousse, light as a candyfloss cloud. This frothy delight spreads evenly on the skin as if it were a breath of summer wind. On the other hand, if you prefer a more fluid texture, the sunscreen serum is the perfect choice: cool and silky, it melts into the skin without leaving a greasy residue. But that's not all. For the adventurous souls, there's also sun mist: just spray some of this magic on your skin and you are ready to face the sun in style.
