Secrets of the overnight beauty routine
All the skin, body and hair care treatments to do at night, when the body regenerates
April 2nd, 2024
We constantly worry about how and how much we sleep, to the extent of organizing tailor-made vacations, but we don't always focus on those specific treatments that yield better results when done while we're in the arms of Morpheus. It's understandable. Often, after an intense day of work or study, we're exhausted, and the most we can manage before slipping under the covers is to remove makeup and brush our teeth. However, dedicating a few extra minutes to ourselves could improve both the quality of our sleep and our appearance. Have you ever noticed how your skin looks brighter and refreshed after a good night's sleep?
During Sleep, the Skin Regenerates
During sleep, our body regenerates and replenishes energy for the next day. While we're in the realm of dreams, the skin—shielded from environmental threats like pollution and UV rays, which subject it to continuous stress—enters a recovery mode, focusing on a regeneration process that can be up to three times faster than during the day. As we start to feel sleepy, our skin begins to relax. Then, between 9 PM and 11 PM, during the prelude to sleep, the skin is better able to absorb topical treatments, and DNA repair is enhanced. Between 11 PM and 4 AM, cellular turnover increases due to the rise in HGH (human growth hormone), which boosts blood flow and collagen production, along with cortisol, melatonin, and the sleep hormone, acting as an indirect antioxidant, preventing signs of skin aging like wrinkles and loss of elasticity.

Night-time Facial Treatments
A nighttime skincare routine is crucial for maintaining healthy and youthful-looking skin because it supports the reparative changes that occur overnight. The first step? Cleansing. It's essential to wash your face before bed to remove makeup, moisturizers, sunscreen, and everything else we used in our morning skincare routine, as well as sweat, pollution, and other external factors. The key is to choose the cleanser that's most suitable for us. For example, if we have oily skin, it's better to opt for a foam or gel solution. If the skin is dry and sensitive, we can benefit more from a cleanser, and if it's acne-prone, we should look for a product with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. We could opt for a double cleanse by adding a toner, perhaps exfoliating, capable of removing any remaining makeup residue, dirt, and excess sebum. After toning, apply a serum tailored to personal needs: for a gentler solution, we could incorporate bakuchiol, while if we need to combat acne and enlarged pores, we seek out AHAs and BHAs to eliminate dead skin cells and excess sebum. If dryness is our concern, then it's all about hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and glycerin. At this point, all that's left is to apply eye cream and moisturizer, which will work their magic overnight. Once or twice a week, we can add a face mask and a hydrating lip mask like the hugely popular Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask.

Body Treatments to Do at Night
Did you know that soaking in a warm bath—perhaps enriched with magnesium-based salts—for 20-30 minutes 2 hours before bedtime helps detoxify, boosts metabolism, calms the nervous system, relaxes the skin, and opens pores? Just add a candle or scent the environment with essential oils like lavender and chamomile, play a relaxing playlist to set the right atmosphere. Alternatively, a shower works fine too. The important thing is to choose a shower gel with nourishing formulas that restore the skin barrier. Once or twice a week, exfoliate with a scrub. Then, massage a moisturizing cream all over the body. A good example? Fenty Beauty's Butta Drop Body Mousse, rich in glycerin, essential oils, mango, and shea butter. We can also add a cuticle oil to gently massage before bed, which will help nourish and strengthen our nails while we sleep, and occasionally, a hydrating foot mask. Don't forget deodorant either. At night, sweat glands are less active, and the product has time to penetrate and effectively block sweat ducts.

Night-time Haircare
Sleep also impacts the growth and appearance of our hair. The first rule is: never go to bed with wet hair because damp strands are weaker and more prone to breakage. If we don't feel like using a hairdryer, we could opt for a microfiber hair towel and lie down without fear of causing damage. Once a week or as needed, apply a nourishing hair mask, focusing mainly on the ends, then wrap the hair in a towel or silk scarf to retain moisture and let the mask work its magic overnight. Another rule to follow for maintaining healthy hair is to brush and detangle it before applying appropriate oil, perhaps based on rosemary, honey, or argan. It's better to gather the mane in a braid secured with silk elastics, as tossing and turning in sleep can cause tangling and knotting, leading to breakage and damage. Finally, pay attention to the scalp with a serum that reduces inflammation, keeps it in good condition, and creates a healthy environment for hair growth. The last consideration is the pillowcase. We should choose silk because it's an extremely delicate fabric with natural antibacterial properties, minimizing frizz.
Products for the Night-time Beauty Routine
While we sleep, the skin is more active, permeable, and receptive. Therefore, we should enhance the spontaneous renewal of skin and hair with the use of products and beauty treatments suitable for addressing specific issues such as peptides, collagen boosters, and antioxidants, which, penetrating deeply, promote effective and restorative action capable of bringing well-being to the entire body, including skin and hair. Nighttime skincare and haircare routines are crucial for turning rest into a true beauty sleep, besides being an almost therapeutic moment to remind ourselves to take care of ourselves, just as we deserve.
