Earth Day is an invitation to consume consciously Here are some ideas for sustainable beauty shopping

The theme chosen for Earth Day 2024 is the planet against plastic. The goal? To reduce plastic production by 60% by 2040. An urgent need considering that, while in 1950 the world produced just two million tons of plastic, we now produce over 450 million tons, and only 9% of the plastic ever produced has been recycled. These are enormous figures for which the beauty industry is partly responsible. That's why more and more brands are emerging with a sustainable ethos or have decided to review their practices by evolving towards a more responsible and eco-conscious business model.

There is greater attention towards materials and ingredients that follow a philosophy of ethical sourcing, cruelty-free, green, vegan, or coming from upcycling, environmentally friendly formulations, minimal and recyclable packaging, solid formats, and specific awareness projects and campaigns. The idea behind many brands is to propose a 360-degree concept of wellness that goes beyond simple skincare, makeup, or haircare to embrace a more holistic and green approach to cosmetics at every stage, from raw materials to product packaging. All this without losing appeal, quality, effectiveness, or even instagrammability.

Green initiatives by beauty brands

On the occasion of Earth Day, many brands have launched projects and initiatives aimed at actively caring for our planet, intensifying a green commitment that, in most cases, lasts all year. This is the case with Davines, which renews We Sustain Beauty, its global socio-environmental project that promotes organic regenerative agriculture to combat climate change. Attention to Mother Earth is also evident with Tesori d'Oriente, which has chosen to support Il Giardino dei Ciliegi, the project of the Italian Environment Foundation (FAI), which involves the planting of over 200 cherry trees in the municipality of Sospiro, in the province of Cremona, to absorb carbon and pollutants, regulate water flow, and have a cooling effect. Water, in particular, the sea, is at the center of initiatives by Rilastil, Shiseido, and Aveda. Rilastil collaborates with Marevivo for the national campaign #Adoptabeach, beach clean-ups dedicated to cleaning and protecting Italian beaches. The third and final appointment will focus on environmental education and will be held in June at a beach resort in Tuscany.

The Blue Project by Shiseido also aims to protect the seas and oceans worldwide. As part of the M.A.R.E. project, it collaborates with the CVC Foundation (Centro Velico Caprera ETS), and thanks to a catamaran, it will analyze the waters of the Western Mediterranean, collecting data on the presence of any chemicals, as well as local biodiversity. Finally, for Earth Month, Aveda supports Oxfam Italia's campaign Every Drop Counts, which aims to provide clean and drinkable water to the poorest communities on the planet, affected by conflicts, environmental disasters, and droughts. Throughout April, you can make a minimum donation at participating Aveda salons or a voluntary donation at the dedicated link.

Brands and sustainable shopping

There are many things we as consumers can do to safeguard the well-being of our planet, one of the first being conscious shopping, oriented towards products made by transparent companies attentive to the environment in every phase of production, from raw materials to packaging. Among the beauty brands that place sustainability at the center of their project are Adesso Beauty, with its skincare inspired by the natural aesthetics of French beauty, and Yepoda, with its vegan cosmetics formulated and produced sustainably in Korea. Both collaborate with the international association 1% for the planet and allocate 1% of their turnover to associations that preserve the planet.

Korff has long been dedicated to products with a positive impact on the planet, such as Korff Collagen Age Filler Face Cream based on Bakuchiol. Amarey, founded by sisters Andrea Dominique, Jaqueline, and Micaela Illy, develops the unexpressed qualities of the Arabica coffee plant for cellular regeneration of the skin, giving life to a sustainable beauty line from ingredients to packaging. In Aéras, an experiential cosmetics brand, prefers to root itself in its land, for a series of products created and produced in Sardinia with local raw materials; while Penelope Skin uses grape pomace, vineyard waste, and their phyto-complex as a powerful anti-aging agent.
