What's the perfect eyeliner color for you?
A new TikTok filter and color theory help you find it
November 6th, 2024
You’re in your trusted beauty store, intending only to pick up that concealer you ran out of this morning, but suddenly, something catches your eye. It’s a new collection of eyeliners and colored pencils that seem to be calling your name. We know, you usually stick with classic black, and when you feel like a change, you might go for a subtle brown. But today, you’re ready to go bold and add a splash of color to your otherwise too-monochrome fall. The question naturally arises: which color will best enhance your eyes? TikTok users seem to have found a universal answer thanks to a filter based on color theory. This isn’t the first time a platform filter has been used to improve our makeup routines. Just think of the filter that shows how to match your makeup to your contrast level, which has now garnered thousands of views. It’s called “whats your contrast” and helps you determine if you have a low, medium, or high contrast. To clarify, Hailey Bieber has a low contrast level, so if you discover the same using the filter, copying her makeup tutorials could enhance your features.

Eye makeup according to the TikTok filter:
The “Find My Eyeliner Color” filter, as mentioned earlier, is based on color theory and was designed to help you pick the perfect pencil or eyeliner shade to complement your eye color. The filter suggests the following shades:
- Purple
- Lilac
- Warm brown
- Dusty pink
- Blue-gray
- Emerald green
- Burgundy
- Black
- Dark brown
The first step is to select your eye color from the options displayed in a circle. The system then marks, with a golden star, which of the 10 shades would best enhance your gaze.

How does color theory work?
It’s a set of rules and principles that help us understand how colors interact and affect our perceptions. It’s like a guidebook for colors, allowing us to choose the most effective combinations for creating a certain visual impact.
Key concepts in color theory:
- Color Wheel: A graphical representation of colors arranged in a circle. It allows us to see complementary (opposite), analogous (adjacent), or triadic (forming an equilateral triangle) color relationships.
- Primary Colors: The three basic colors from which all others are derived: red, yellow, and blue.
- Secondary Colors: These come from mixing two primary colors: green (yellow + blue), orange (red + yellow), and purple (red + blue).
- Tertiary Colors: These result from mixing a primary color with an adjacent secondary color.
- Hue, Saturation, and Brightness: These three qualities define a color. Hue is the pure color, saturation is its intensity, and brightness is the amount of light or darkness in the color.
- Warm and Cool Colors: Warm colors (red, orange, yellow) convey warmth, energy, and vibrancy, while cool colors (blue, green, purple) evoke calmness, tranquility, and freshness.
