This winter, lips are as sweet and hot as chocolate
Mini guide to Chocolate lips
November 14th, 2024
Is there anything more comforting than holding a steaming mug of hot chocolate when the temperature drops? Thick, creamy, dark, sweet, and fragrant, it fills the heart with a delicious nostalgia, the mouth with flavor, and, this winter, even colors our lips. That’s the message from beauty brands, which continue to launch new pencils, lipsticks, and glosses in shades of brown. TikTok videos are also teaching us how to create the perfect chocolate lips, which some are calling hot chocolate lips or cocoa lips. Like berry make-up, the trend perfectly captures the season’s mood and is inspired by 90s looks of celebrities like Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Victoria Beckham, Drew Barrymore, and other stars who loved wearing brown lipstick. But while the grunge decade preferred a matte effect, today’s trend is all about the glossy finish.

How to do chocolate lips
Creating this look is simple. All you need is a brown lipstick or, if you prefer a glowy effect, a gloss or lip balm along with a lip pencil slightly darker than the chosen shade. It’s a good idea to exfoliate and deeply hydrate the lips to avoid emphasizing small lines or chapped areas. For a more vibrant finish, a smart trick is to apply concealer on the lips to tone down their natural color. Then, outline the lips with a pencil, like the Soft Shape Lip Liner in Chocolate Brown by Kess Berlin, which is waterproof, slightly matte, creamy, and smudge-proof. To make the look last longer, you can fill in the entire lip with the pencil. Next, it’s time for lipstick. Apply carefully to avoid smudging beyond the lines. We suggest M·A·Cximal Sleek Satin Lipstick in Film Noir or Truth Be Untold, both by MAC Cosmetics with a satin finish. Alternatively, or in addition if you’re feeling bold, opt for a brown lip gloss, preferably one with hyaluronic acid and peptides for extra hydration, giving the lips a fuller, kiss-proof look. Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer in Hot Chocolit by Fenty Beauty is perfect, as its shea butter formula makes lips look visibly plumper and smoother in one swipe. You could also try Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Stix, a hybrid between gloss and lipstick for a highly pigmented effect.
Which shade of brown to choose?
Cappuccino and cinnamon, biscuit and caramel, mocha and espresso, hazelnut and chocolate… there are many, delicious shades of brown, but how do we pick the best one for us? The general rule is to match your skin undertone. Avoid choosing a shade that’s too similar, as this can create a washed-out look. Those with fair skin should look for a hint of gray, taupe, or nude brown. Those with a golden or olive complexion can go for cinnamon and cappuccino, while people with dark skin can play with contrasts or opt for intense shades between red and brown. These are general guidelines, but we are free to play around and wear any colors we prefer. Depending on your mood, you can go for dark chocolate or even Cinnamochaccino, a blend of cinnamon and coffee tones, recently worn by JLo.

How to wear chocolate lips
The best thing about chocolate lipstick? Its versatility. It can be chic and subtle or glam and sensual, without the drama or vampy vibes of burgundy and bordeaux. This makes it perfect for any occasion, from the office to a brunch with friends or impressing your crush. Simply switch up the finish by adding a touch of gloss, going matte in the morning and juicy and glossy for the evening. You can pair it with a clean look or go for a slightly more elaborate but monochromatic style, playing with warm brown tones on the eyes, cheeks, and, why not, even nails.
