The RealReal presents the sustainable project ReCollection 01
Featuring upcycled items by Balenciaga, Jacquemus, Dries Van Noten, Stella McCartney and Simone Rocha
April 2nd, 2021
The RealReal focuses more and more on upcycling and, on the occasion of Earth Month, unveils the sustainable project ReCollection 01. For its first in-house clothing collection, the resale site has turned a selection of damaged and discarded garments from 8 brands into new luxury items, with the aim of promoting the concept of circular fashion, showing how something beautiful and cool, even exclusive, can be born from wasted materials. Balenciaga, Dries Van Noten, Stella McCartney, Jacquemus, Simone Rocha, A-Cold-Wall, Zero + Maria Cornejo and Ulla Johnson sent their damaged or incomplete products from old seasons to Atelier & Repairs, where the team of the Los Angeles-based studio, a leader in the repair and "transformation" of existing clothes, repaired and reinvented them by adding pieces of quilts. The result is 50 unique creations such as a Balenciaga denim jacket with a multicolored flower on the back, a brown blazer from Stella McCartney embellished with red quilt stripes on the turnbacks, a white mini dress from Jacquemus with floral stripes under the bust or a lavender Dries Van Noten vest with pastel inserts along the edges.
To have such a dynamic group of luxury brands join us for our first collection sends an incredibly powerful message about the importance of circularity and the opportunity we all have to support a more sustainable future for fashion. - Said Julie Wainwright, founder and CEO of The RealReal - Our hope is that ReCollection will inspire people to think about the afterlife of what they own and embrace more conscious consumption.
Stella McCartney shares the same opinion:
As a designer, I think it’s the biggest compliment for your designs to have an afterlife. To me, that is luxury. And I take it into consideration from the beginning of the process. The timelessness of the design, how it’s made, what materials are used to produce it- it is all part of our ethos at Stella McCartney. We invest a lot to make sure that our products are made to last rather than end up in a landfill.
ReCollection 01 is available on The RealReal website with prices ranging from $195 to $2,450. A part of the proceeds from the sale of each piece will be donated to One Tree Planted.
