All the trends of Milan Fashion Week SS22
From miniskirts to bandeau tops, from crochet pieces to platform shoes
September 28th, 2021
Milan Fashion Week is over, offering us a glimpse of what we will wear in Spring-Summer 2022. While we will continue to follow many of the FW21 trends such as bangs or platform shoes, there are plenty of other items waiting to have a place in our closets. From Versace and its catwalk full of stars to Prada with its double show live from both Milan and Shanghai, the collections to choose from are many and different, but they hide some common features that will help us create the perfect outfit to be cool in the coming months. Any clues? Focus on orange, miniskirts and bandeau.
Read on to discover all the trends of Milan Fashion Week SS22.
Bandeau
The bra will be the star of SS22: triangular, like a simple bikini, bralette, made of lace, in leather, colored or total black, worn with high-waisted pants or a miniskirt, under a maxi blazer or a perfecto. The coolest model is the bandeau, a simple strip of fabric that in the most extreme versions covers slightly more than the nipples, as in the fashion shows of A.C.9, Missoni or N°21.
Dress + Pants
Designers are increasingly looking not only to the early 2000s, but also to the 90s. From the decade of grunge, there is a comeback to the trend of wearing dresses over pants. It doesn't matter if they are jeans, cargo models, leggings, what's important is that they pop up under t-shirt dress or romantic chiffon dresses, giving our outfits a nostalgic and street touch. Revisited by Giorgio Armani, Gabriele Colangelo, Sportmax, Jil Sander Kim Jones x Fendi, this combo becomes even chic.
Crochet
In the cold seasons, we wear knitwear, in the warm ones crochet. From the ultra-chic fishnet dresses by Alberta Ferretti to the multicolor patchworks by Marco Rambaldi, from up to Jil Sander's zig-zag patterns, the catwalks of MFW SS22 make us regret not having learned to crochet from our granny. Now, we have only two solutions: select one of these brands and fill our shopping list with bikinis and miniskirts or improve our DIY techniques by following one of the many online tutors, like this video in which @cheaplobster teaches us how to create a plastic crochet bag.
Miniskirts
Let's get ready to show off our legs, cause the only thing all designers, from Versace to Blumarine, agree on is that the must-have of SS22 will be the miniskirt. This item, which has always been a symbol of women's empowerment, is now shorter and has a minimal shape, but is embellished with details that make it irresistible. Prada dedicates it an entire collection and makes it less ordinary by adding to this piece of fabric a sort of evening dress train; Max Mara matches it with bandeau and trench, creating the uniform of the contemporary bourgeois rebel; Versace makes it starting from a foulard; while Des Phemmes covers its mini with crystals and colorful sequins.
Feathers & Fringes
Since Prada brought them back a few seasons ago, fringes have become a must-have detail for all major brands and will be part of our wardrobe next spring-summer as well. Dolce & Gabbana uses them to recreate a sparkling JLo 2000s look and Philosophy by Lorenzo Serafini to give a textural twist to dresses and coats, while Emporio Armani inserts them in a series of color blocking outfits. On the N°21 catwalk, fringes are alternated with feathers, which ethereal, light and floating, move at every step of the models, making us want to wear flamboyant tops and miniskirts from morning till night.
Power suit
As previously mentioned when talking about FW21 trends, after pandemic and lockdown, along with the desire to party, there is also a return to classic, almost formal elegance. It's hard to choose between the timeless elegance of Giorgio Armani's tailored jackets, Sportmax's asymmetrical blazers, MM6's black & white power suits or Versace's vitamin-colored ones. Our style tip? Wear them on bare skin or with a simple triangle bra as in Fendi's fashion show.
See-through
On the SS22 catwalks underwear is the main focus, but there are those who go further by opting for sheer fabrics, lace and silks that highlight the silhouette, revealing the naked body. Wearing this trend means not only having a strong self-confidence, but also making a small act of empowerment by celebrating in a joyful way your sexuality and sensuality. The moods? Refined as at Sportmax and N°21 or playful and girlie as at Blumarine.
Orange
Orange symbolizes understanding, wisdom, balance and ambition. Perhaps this is why most brands, from Boss x Russell Athletic to Max Mara, from MSGM to Sunnei, have chosen this vitaminic, cheerful, positive color for their new creations. If orange is not for you, not even in small doses, mixed with black or white, you can wear purple, yellow (better if pale) or fuchsia, the other shades of SS22. Keyword: dopamine dressing.
Plateau
It doesn't matter if they are sneakers or loafers, sandals or high heels, because next season we should find a place in our closet for a new pair of platforms. From the '70s to the 2000s, passing through the '90s with Fornarina and Miss Sixty, chunky shoes have conquered every generation of fashionistas, including Gen Z who, thanks to the SS22 collections, can now choose between the colored sandals by Versace, Sunnei's mules or the very high boots by A.C.9 and MM6. What's important is to stand out towards the clouds...sky is the limit!
Statement earrings
We know it: the right accessory can completely change an outfit, turning it into a flop or a success that even our worst enemy will envy us. Among the items that can not miss in spring-summer 2022, along with scarves, sunglasses with colored lenses and rainbow eye-liner, there are definitely earrings. The favorite shape of the coming months is the round one, as confirmed by the hoop earrings with logo by Fendi, the ones proposed by Versace in the classic metal version or covered with fabric, but also the models decorated with colored beads and butterflies, presented respectively by Sunnei and Blumarine.
