How to wear cargo pants this spring-summer
Emrata to the latest fashion shows, celebrities and brands can no longer do without them

They are comfortable, practical, cool and much more versatile than we think. That must be why cargo pants are the one throwback garment we can't do without this season. Originally created as utilitarian clothing for workers and the military, this style reached the peak of its popularity in the late 90s and early 2000s when pop and hip hop stars such as Britney Spears, Destiny's Child and Avril Lavigne routinely sported them on the red carpet. Now is the time to dust it off from the back of the wardrobe, track it down in some second-hand shop or buy a new one, choosing from the many different versions proposed by designers for SS22.
The trend of the season is wide-leg trousers, but the catwalk shows reveal a distinct weakness for cargo pants. Reinterpreted in a contemporary key, the classic baggy item with its relaxed fit and large side pockets on the legs acquires a new glamorous allure, perfect for those who are afraid of looking too casual with the usual khaki and beige or camo patterned versions. Inspired by JLo from the Jenny from the block days, Dolce & Gabbana teamed them with crystal-studded tops and jewel sandals; Chanel prefers them floral; Lacoste makes them in technical fabric and sorbet shades; Coperni gives them a particularly summery twist with jungle print shirts and chunky flip-flops; Courreges enriches them with subtle cut-outs on the hips; while at Stella McCartney they are worn very low-waisted and with a leotard. The most scenic are by Balmain who cover them with zips and laces, almost as cool as the electric blue ones proposed by Dion Lee for FW22. At Tom Ford, Blumarine and Diesel, on the other hand, a series of satin cargo pants in bright colors such as turquoise, pink, green and bronze dominate... a rainbow of captivating garments as greedy as a box of gelee sweets.
The ways to wear them are many. There are those who, like Dua Lipa, prefer to fully adopt a Y2K teenage aesthetic by teaming them with micro tees in manga prints and platforms, and those like Gigi Hadid who choose to give them a more contemporary twist by wearing them ultra low-waisted, with a bodysuit or a one-piece swimming costume. For Elsa Hosk they are a great alternative to joggers. Slip them on with an oversized T-shirt, trainers and bucket hat and you're ready to take a trip to the market or walk the dog, but without losing an ounce of style. Kylie Jenner, Pernille Teisbaek and Irina Shayk are in love with the denim version, especially the one with lots of maxi pockets by The Attico, and wear it with everything from micro cardigans to white tank tops; while Leonie Hanne and Emili Sindlev want them in bright colors and wear them with mules, another real must-have of the season.
