Past, present and future in SS22 video starring Chloë Sevigny, Bella Hadid and Megan The Stallion
June 9th, 2022
"Click the cam, roll the scene," sings Shygirl as the images and Mugler girls follow one another with an epileptic pace in the video, the third in collaboration with Torso Solutions, featuring Maison's SS22 collection. There's Megan Thee Stallion, new adept of the Cadwallader crew (the designer also co-directed the Plan B video), who, sheathed in a denim cut-out catsuit recreates the mood of Beyoncé's Single Ladies and then ends up on a billboard to make way for Chloë Sevigny. The coolest actress in history, in an extra-long ponytail and sheer mini dress, walks briskly toward the camera before tumbling to the ground and with a somersault transforming into Swaee Barbie. All taken up by '90s super tops (and bffs) Shalom Harlow and Amber Valletta, who, a blink later, we find kissing passionately on the hood of a limo, before Bella Hadid (with her doppelgänger) and Dominique Jackson take center stage. Then, it's up to Lourdes Leon, Aweng Chuol, Elizabeth "Liz" Cambage, Raynara Negrine and all the other leading ladies in an ace fashion film of coolness, fashion and eroticism. The film's grand finale features Maria Kochetkova engaged in a thrilling and electric dance number, a scene that pays homage to Thierry Mugler's love for this art form as well as its fashion. Indeed, the prima ballerina wears an archival gown from the spring/summer 1998 Jeu de Paume collection that also inspired a series of creations for SS22 in chiffon and Perspex details.
Between Matrix-like shots, trippy glitches, saucy kisses, stuntgirl falls, cool choreography and dystopian glamour, the new collection designed by Casey Cadwallader is a celebration and evolution of Thierry Mugler fashion. Just look closely and it's all there, from décolleté de la derrière to sharply cut tailored dresses, from jumpsuits that snake down the legs and torso to corsets, from plexiglass collars to cropped blazers, from ombré-effect bodycon dresses that quote the 1998 and 1999 fashion shows.
The spring/summer 2022 imagined by Cadwallader plays on the evolution of the founder's silhouettes, hitting the models' bodies with denim, pure tailoring pieces, and the now-iconic tulle illusions, the Maison's new signature that create trompe l'oeil effects that no one from Dua Lipa to Bella Hadid can resist.
