Flossing is the hottest trend of summer 2022
The Shibari of fashion
July 14th, 2022
Flossing is not a teeth-cleaning technique, nor a dance that became popular a few years ago, it is the trend that is overheating in the summer of 2022. In fact, garments embellished with laces and strings that wrap around the body, clinging to every inch of skin like thirsty roots of beauty have been around for a few seasons already, ever since Nensi Dojaka made her debut, conquering celebrities and influencers with her ultra-feminine and deconstructed aesthetic. Between sheers, cut-outs and string games, the Albanian-born designer's creations have become a must-have for celebrities such as Zendaya or Dua Lipa and have inspired the work of other brands.
Jacquemus, Christopher Esber, Supriya Lele, Dion Lee, Ottolinger and Acne Studios are just some of the names that have tried their hand at the trend, each according to their own style. Some have added laces to tops and skirts to emphasize the waistline or hips, others have preferred to sketch graphics on the back, while a further group has focused on trousers by making side slits that seem to echo some outfits worn in the 1990s and early 2000s by Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears or designed by iconic talents such as Hervé Léger and Azzedine Alaïa. If Dojaka's mini dresses and tops are the most desired by influencers like Camille Charriere and stars like Megan Fox who recently sported pink ones at the screening of Machine Gun Kelly's docufilm Life in pink, equally popular are Mônot super sexy evening creations. From Hailey Bieber to Charlie D'Amelio, from Emrata (who has long embraced the flossing trend with her Inamorata Swim line) to Olivia Culpo have all chosen Lebanese designer Eli Mizrahi's brand for red carpets and special events; two other cross-over and very hot options are the Nirvana dress by Peter Dundas, loved by Heidi Klum and Ciara, and the bra top and skirt set by Grace Ling, one of Jennifer Lopez's favorite designers. And the Italian celebrities? From Elodie to Chiara Ferragni have a passion for the Fico bra by Andrea Adamo.
Flossing is the Shibari of fashion. Like the ancient Japanese artistic form of binding, it mixes beauty, art and eroticism. In both techniques, ribbons and ropes touch and cross each other to emphasize the curves of the body, thus transforming the wearer into a sort of living work of art. The difference? If Shibari requires relaxation of body and mind and total trust in the other, flossing requires total trust in oneself. It is a declaration of love, self-esteem and empowerment sealed by thin threads of cloth.
