Body chains were worn since thousands of years ago. In the Byzantine empire they were embellished with medallions; in Greek and Roman art they were often associated with Venus, the goddess of love; for the Persians they could symbolize both female sexuality and male power; in West Africa they are still used today of colored beads; but it seems that the first to sport them, in religious ceremonies or as a sign of wealth, were the Indians. Making them cool, however, were the goddesses of the early 2000s, stars such as Christina Aguilera, Nelly Furtado, Shakira, Paris Hilton and Amanda Bynes. Two decades later, they are still dictating style, not only in outfits and hairstyle, but also in accessories. So, along with cargo pants, platform shoes and popcorn textures, we've begun to fall back in love with these jewels that encircle the body and emphasize curves, giving us a self-confidence twist. The difference from the past? They have shed all excess and kitsch heritage to marry with more sophisticated looks. Whether one chooses belly chains or the more elaborate version composed of strands that, like a precious harness, wrap around the neck and waist, then crisscrossing at chest height, it doesn't matter. Both models are perfect for both giving an extra touch to bikinis and one-piece swimsuits and for brightening up monochromatic dresses or other everyday looks. To find the right inspiration just scroll through the images of the spring/summer 2022 collections of Chanel, Blumarine, Versace and Supriya Lele, who opted for belly jewelry, belts to be worn on bare skin, while Balmain, Marni, Schiaparelli and Philosopy by Lorenzo Serafini turned them into real sculptural tops.
Now that summer is here, it girls and influencers have not missed the chance to show off the trend at the beach. Rihanna and Giovanna Engelbert wear them even during pregnancy, while among the most addicted to bodysuits and belly chains are Emrata, Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber who have a real passion for the minimal chic models in gold and diamonds by Jacquie Aiche.
