The 5 trends for Spring Summer 23
The mini guide to the 5 most anticipated trends of SS23
February 28th, 2023
We shed outerwear and puffer jackets, lighten the mood, and do away with layering. Between utility garments, glittery accessories, the ever-present denim, the return of minimalism and daring motocross, here's how to navigate the new trends.
SS23 Trend: Pocket
Soft utility still remains among the most beloved top trends this season, and few like cargo pants can boast as many as 1.5B views on Tik Tok. Jackets and pants, but also mini skirts, are invaded by pockets that enliven their shapes and exponentially increase their desirability. From the most extreme Marine Serre, who sends the cargo patchwork survival gown studded with pockets down the runway, to the monochromatic Dione Lee, to Andrea Adamo's used leather, no show forgot to sew at least one pocket onto the looks. Acne Studios adds a full-length zipper to the pant leg, Blumarine wants camo print and pockets, Isabel Marant raises the waist, tightens the fit and adds strategic pockets.
SS23 Trend: Metal
Metallic glints run through the new collections and the most unexpected fabrics. If metallic used to rhyme with sequins and lamé, now it's the fuller-bodied textures that are smeared, perforated, worked. Among the most striking examples: Chloè covers Gigi Hadid with a maxi perforated mesh, Altuzarra chooses them for the top and the multi pleated skirt, Simone Rocha plays with volumes and with a markedly glossy effect. Glittering gold for Coperni's mini bag, silver maxi bows for Loewe's sandals, sequins galore for LaQuan Smith's super-skimming bodysuit
SS23 Trend: Denim
It has been more than two decades since that highly questionable coordinated look pulled off by Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears at the American Music Awards. Despite the débâcle, denim has, fortunately, retained its fame, while the all-over version has been lavishly revisited. If Bally opts for denim in different washes and an open air shirt, Diesel stretches the low waist, spreads, breaks and perforates, while A.W.A.KE. creates an optical patchwork for the long dress. Deserving special attention are The Attico's destroyed jacket, Miu Miu's maxi logo sabot, Balenciaga's denim Hourglass. It's denim time.
SS23 Trend: Motocross
A little bit Ryan Gosling in The place beyond the pines, a little bit Christina Aguilera in the unforgettable Dirrty, directed by an equally unforgettable David LaChapelle. Motocross mania is rampant bringing back leather jackets with maxi padded shoulders, patches and contrasting color details. From Courrèges, via Alyx and KNWLS, SS23 shows take their inspiration from cross-country tracks, while Acne Studios, Diesel and Heron Preston try to make their way right into the spring wardrobe.
SS23 Trend: Clean
The immediate aesthetic reference is to the clean, rigorous minimalism of the 1990s. Today's reinterpretation pushes on tailoring and fabrics that are as precious as they are eternal; while essential shapes retain their haughtiness, materials want to be natural, black, white or in reassuring colors. On the runways are Ann Demeulemeester and white long dress, Y/Preject and black slip dress, Prada with white long john and cropped blazer. Shopping invites you to look at Helmut Lang's slender dresses, Jil Sander's powder blue shirts, Wardrobe NYC's cream double-breaste
