New Year's Eve looks inspired by the catwalks
Style ideas for the night of Dec. 31 wherever you've decided to celebrate
December 28th, 2023
3. 2. 1. Boom. In the meantime, the countdown has begun to finally bid farewell to 2023 and welcome 2024. Along with the doubts that plague us about what the new year will look like comes the fateful question: "What should I wear on New Year's Eve?". Is it better to choose a classic and somewhat drab black dress or go for a bold colour? Respect tradition and wear something red or go for sequins that shine brighter than fireworks? Do we have to sacrifice comfort and slip into a pair of stilettos or are flats okay? And if we're forced to spend the night of 31 December at work or outdoors, where we're at the mercy of the cold and the weather, how can we not give up an ounce of style that makes us feel special?
G-Club comes to your rescue with some ideas on how to tackle the glitziest night of the year in style, no matter where you choose to celebrate, whether it's in the mountains or in the heat (lucky you!).
In the snow: down jacket and catsuit
The inspiration for Silvester is Audrey Hepburn in Charade. The diva wore balaclava, fur and catsuit. Schiaparelli updated the look, adding opulence and combining comfort and glamour. For FW23, she proposed black down jackets and catsuits teamed with ultra-high heeled boots and maxi cardigans with chunky gold detailing worn like mini dresses. Also interesting is the combination of a thermal catsuit and chain dress by Heron Preston, which is a cool inspiration. Which of the two options do you prefer for 31 December in the snow?
At home: no pants
No pants is the fashion trend of 2023. All celebrities, from Kendall Jenner to Emma Corrin, loved it, inspired by Miu Miu's FW23 collection. You too have always wanted to hit the streets in sequinned micro slips, stockings and nothing else, but haven't done it for fear of it being too much. Now is the time to pluck up the courage and try something new, at least within your own four walls. Try surprising relatives and friends at New Year's Eve dinner. Maybe the experiment will be a success and you'll be wearing a trouserless look at the next party too. A tip to feel less uncomfortable? Choose ultra-covering stockings.
At the disco: metallic mini dress
This New Year's Eve, you can let your inner 80s disco diva out. Take a cue from the catwalks of Ferragamo, Blumarine and Dolce & Gabbana and choose a mini dress in lamé, silver or gold. This will give new impetus to the glow-in-the-dark trend and make you feel beautiful and invincible on the dance floor like an unusual mix of Diana Ross and Joan of Arc. You can combine the dress with opaque or sheer tights, pumps or a pair of minimal sandals. We advise you to make the outfit the absolute protagonist, wear minimalist make-up and style your hair in a bun or a wet hairstyle.
In the heat: slip dress
If you spend the night of 31 December in the heat by the sea, you'll be the envy of us all and might spend the whole holiday in a bikini and bare feet. But at least for New Year's Eve you should style yourself up a bit and slip into a slip dress. On recent catwalks, Ann Demeulemeester, MSGM, Diesel, Atlein and other brands have offered many, especially black ones. They are all beautiful, chic and can also be paired with ultra-flat sandals or flip-flops. Leave your hair down, add a pair of interesting earrings like those from Panconesi and you're perfect for partying all night long as the sun sinks into the sea.
At the restaurant: something red
It is a tradition to wear something red on New Year's Eve to conjure up good luck, health and stability for the new year. The reason for this? The colour red has always been associated with energy, strength, excitement and other positive aspects. So why not follow this little ritual in the restaurant and wear a red dress? From Kim Shui to Philosophy by Lorenzo Serafini, from Dundas to Nensi Dojaka - there are plenty of brands to take inspiration from. The styles suggested by Kika Vargas are also super cute.
At the spa: sequined pants and a top
If you've decided to spend New Year's Eve in the wellness area and get pampered in a spa, that doesn't mean you have to take off your bathrobe at some point after the most relaxing scrubs and massages in the world and slip into real clothes for dinner. We advise you to follow the example of Emporio Armani and Chanel and combine elegance and comfort with sequinned trousers and a simple top. That way, you'll look chic without making a big effort.
In square: teddy coat/faux fur and red touch
Many 31-December events take place outdoors in Italian cities. Spending New Year's Eve in a square can be an inexpensive and fun way to celebrate with lots of people and welcome in the New Year. The only downside? The cold weather. To cope with the freezing temperatures, it's best to opt for outerwear that keeps us warm but is also cool, such as a teddy coat or faux fur. We can take a cue from Vivetta and Stella McCartney's FW23 collections and add a touch of red too, perhaps a woolly hat, balaclava or a pair of boots.
At work: basic with a shimmering twist
Unfortunately, many people will be working on New Year's Eve. From restaurant workers to healthcare professionals, many will likely have to wear a uniform, but there is one way to celebrate the New Year in style: accessorise. A nice pair of sparkly earrings, a ring, a headband, a bow. If you have the opportunity and the time to do it before the stroke of midnight, you can do it like Halle Berry in New Year's Eve. The actress plays a nurse who changes her clothes at the end of her shift at the hospital to celebrate with her husband via Skype. The easiest way to do this is to add a sparkly touch to the shirt, jumper or jacket you're wearing as a uniform, perhaps with a skirt, taking your cue from Halle, but also Valentino's FW23.
