Sandy Liang and Salomon have understood what it means to be girls today
The new collab is an ode to contemporary femininity
July 18th, 2024
These days, social media is abuzz with discussions about girlhood, what it means to be girls in the contemporary world, girl dinner and girl math, toys and Sonny Angel. Is the bimbo-fication of the female experience a bad thing? Have we rediscovered the childish joy of being ourselves, or are we betraying any ideal of feminism by ignoring current events and our careers to live in a pink and enchanted world? Being just girls today is so confusing (as Lorde and Charli XCX teach us), it’s more complex than ever, and the debates are endless. Enter Sandy Liang, who has literally made femininity her brand, with her collaboration with Salomon.
Who is Sandy Liang?
Let’s start from the beginning. Sandy Liang is a designer born in 1991. In 2014, she founded her eponymous brand, inspired by the women in her life, particularly her grandmother and the Chinese restaurant her father founded in Chinatown, New York, where she organized the show for the spring/summer 2015 season. Her creations evoke feelings of nostalgia, abound with bows and distant inspirations, lace, and a femininity that doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not, true in its simplicity and sensuality. In 2022, her first shoe collection arrived, inspired by ballet. In spring 2023, a mesh ballerina and the first bridal collection debuted. Her aesthetic has set trends, fitting perfectly among the current social media cores and trends, from coquette to ballet core.
The Second Collaboration Between Salomon and Sandy Liang
Now, Salomon and Sandy Liang have announced their second collaboration, featuring a technical yet feminine shoe, a perfect integration of the two worlds and an exact representation of what it means to be girls today, in all its contradictions and plurality. Two new models, Speedcross 3 Ribbon Sandy Liang and RX MJ Sandy Liang, explore the possibilities of femininity without being intimidated by more casual and sporty aspects. "Our first collaboration was about updating Salomon models I love by adding key elements of nostalgia and femininity," the New York designer said. "This time, I'm very excited to continue working on this idea and incorporate the key points of my design in a more distinctive way." The shoes are available starting July 25th.
