The colors we'll be wearing in fall 2024
From earthy, mossy shades reminiscent of nature to pastel girlish tones
August 27th, 2024
Autumn is coming, bringing with it a series of new trends and colors to wear. For the upcoming months, classic staples like gray, always refined and versatile, brown, ranging from chocolate to beige, and khaki are set to remain in the spotlight, presenting themselves as a valid alternative to black. There’s no shortage of bolder, more vibrant accents to add character and brightness even on the gloomiest and dullest days. This season, we can add pastel shades to our shopping list, but also Gucci’s cherry red, Ferrari’s bright red, Prada’s coquette pink, Moschino’s sky blue, or Dries Van Noten’s mint green. Which should you choose to stay cool from the office to dinner with your date? It all depends on your mood at the moment.
Here are the colors we’ll be wearing in Autumn 2024.
Hot Chocolate Brown
Mood: This warm brown blends the indulgence of hot chocolate with its spiritual meaning connected to the earth, symbolizing balance, authenticity, and simplicity. It’s associated with the root chakra, located at the base of the spine, which corresponds to grounding, stability, and security.
On the catwalk: You could say that brown is the new black. Always appreciated for its versatility, this color has appeared on the FW24 runways in various shades, from caramel to coffee, chestnut to chocolate. Bottega Veneta and Jason Wu chose it to color asymmetrical dresses, Miu Miu and Max Mara for skirt suits, Ermanno Scervino for long coats and wool sweaters, and Louis Vuitton for sensual outfits that play with transparency, while Luar and Celine have coated jackets, tops, and leather miniskirts in chocolate.
Wear it like: Pernille Teisbaek, who relies on brown for different looks, from daytime to elegant and sensual evening wear.
Khaki
Mood: Some call it olive green, others khaki. This shade between green and brown was originally used in British military uniforms in the 19th century for its camouflage properties, perfect in desert and dusty environments. Since then, it has extended beyond military clothing to become a fashion must-have. Given its origins and earthy tone, khaki embodies stability, reliability, and practicality. It can also represent nature. When worn, it can help manifest focus on one’s goals and awareness of one’s actions.
On the catwalk: It’s definitely one of the colors of the season, chosen by many brands like Burberry, Ferragamo, Luisa Spagnoli, and Isabel Marant for monochromatic looks. Marant used khaki to add a touch of boldness and rigor to her bohemian and feminine silhouettes. Balenciaga and Gucci preferred to introduce it in accessories, from bags to shoes, while Louis Vuitton, Burberry, and Ferragamo focused on sophisticated olive green wool coats, dyeing outerwear and wool sweaters in this color, giving them a versatile yet refined twist reminiscent of updated military wear for daily use.
Wear it like: Not a fan of the color? Try a simple cardigan like Lucy Williams.
50 Shades of Gray
Mood: People who like gray are practical, reliable, serene, balanced people. It is believed that choosing clothes or accessories of this color helps to manifest mental, emotional and physical purification. According to crystal therapy, on the other hand, keeping gray crystals with oneself seems to help transform negative energies into positive ones, and also to heal from wounds and traumas dating back to childhood.
On the catwalk: we saw it in the summer season, but we will continue to wear it next fall. This is confirmed by the FW24 fashion weeks, in which gray in all its shades played a leading role, appearing in the collections of Jil Sander, Miu Miu, Ferrari, Missoni, Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini, Tom Ford, MaxMara, Michael Kors and many other brands. Beautiful and all to copy are Carven's looks with overlays of different shades of gray.
Wear it like: Vera van Erp sporting different shades of gray, alternating cozy wool sweaters and strict suits.
Bright red or bordeaux?
Mood: In China, it was the sacred color of the Zhou Dynasty; in the Middle Ages, men wore it as a symbol of power and warfare; during the Baroque period, it began to be linked with sin; today, it evokes emotions such as love, passion, and vitality. Red is associated with the root chakra, and wearing it can help boost self-confidence and a sense of connection with the universe.
On the catwalk: Inspiration should be sought in the FW24 collections. For example, Jil Sander, Sunnei, Proenza Schouler, Miu Miu, Hermés, and Ferrari embraced bolder vibes. Bordeaux, or rather, dark cherry, is the signature tone of Gucci's FW24, but it also appeared in the collections of Victoria Beckham, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Versace, and Ferragamo.
Wear it like this: Bright red or darker tones? Even Elsa Hosk is undecided.
Coquette pink
Mood: Often seen as a delicate color, typically associated with femininity and romance, pink has evolved in recent years. It now evokes not only emotions like grace, sensitivity, tenderness, and innocence, but has also become a symbol of a new, joyful, and self-aware feminism that isn’t afraid to show its girlish and coquette side. A tip: it’s believed that keeping pink crystals with you offers strong relaxing powers and helps clear the mind of negative thoughts. Who knows if it works with clothes too.
On the catwalk: Who could forget the midi dress covered in bows presented by Prada? The brand used the same tone, along with some brighter ones, for cardigans and accessories, paired with darker, more serious items. Pink has also enchanted Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini, Chloé, Chanel, Noir Kei Ninomiya, Sunnei, and others.
Indossalo come: Why not “tone down” its cuteness like Sofia Coelho does?
Toasted Sesame
Mood: This is a neutral shade that conventionally conveys calm, peace, and serenity. Wearing it can be ideal for signaling a fresh start, resetting the past, and building the future you desire. Its spiritual meaning is tied to concepts like simplicity, comfort, and wisdom. It’s believed that those who love it are sensitive, determined, resilient, and reliable.
On the catwalk: The classic camel shade takes on a more energetic and dynamic look on the Fall 2024 runways, with warmer or cooler tones that sometimes resemble toasted sesame, sometimes almond. Its versatility and refinement made it perfect for seasonal looks, adding sophistication to outerwear, pullovers, and dresses. It appeared on the runways of Saint Laurent, Dries Van Noten, Victoria Beckham, Courreges, Tibi, and Chloé.
Indossalo come: Annabel Rosendahl pairs soft toasted sesame outfits with utility jackets for the first chills.
Girlish Vibes: Mint, Yellow, Lilac, Blue
Mood: Pastel colors, with their delicacy, represent balance and serenity, and it’s said that wearing them helps promote inner peace. For example, light blue represents a sense of vastness, freedom, and unlimited potential, evoking a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere; while light purple promotes meditation and introspection, symbolizing reflection and intuition.
On the catwalk: Not just gray, brown, or beige, brands have decided to give a twist to their looks by “breaking” the monochrome with accents of pastel colors, as delightful as sorbets. This was seen in collections from Miu Miu, Marc Jacobs, Dries Van Noten, and Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini. Add to your season’s wishlist pink candy sweaters, pistachio green bags, mint miniskirts, yellow gloves, and anything else your imagination suggests.
Indossalo come: Linda Tol is a master at incorporating small touches of color into basic and neutral-colored outfits.
