Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and "The Squad" won re-election to Congress

When the "sisterhood" defeats Trump

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and The Squad won re-election to Congress When the sisterhood defeats Trump

While the U.S. is in suspense to see if their new president will be Donald Trump or Joe Biden, good news comes: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been re-elected to the House. Together with her, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib, the group of progressive parliamentarians nicknamed The Squad, reconfirm their position.

It all began in 2018 when, on the occasion of their first election, Ocasio-Cortez posted on Instagram a photo of the four of them with the caption "Squad". Since then their sisterhood has become increasingly close and powerful, managing to overcome the frequent xenophobic attacks of Trump and his followers who tried to denigrate their work with phrases like "Send them back", "Jihad Squad" or "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse"

Women, black, democratic, young (between 30 and 45 years old in a parliament where the average age is almost 60) are not only the emerging faces of the U.S. Democratic Party, but a symbol of female empowerment that is especially important now that the election of Amy Coney Barrett, Trump's pupil, ultra-Catholic and anti-abortionist, was appointed Supreme Court Judge after the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, giving more and more power to the right-wing lobbies.  Instead, Ocasio-Cortez, Omar, Tlaib and Pressley, representing New York, Minnesota, Michigan and Massachusetts respectively, are united by common battles such as Medicare for all, free colleges, $15 minimum wage and attention to climate change.

Our sisterhood is resilient. - Omar tweeted commenting on The Squad's new victory.

Meanwhile, Pressley wrote:

Together, we have fought for our shared humanity. We have organised. We have mobilised. We have legislated our values. I am so proud to be your Congresswoman and your partner in the work. I believe in the power of us. And we’re just getting started.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who got almost 69% preference in the 14th District of New York first tweeted:

Thank you to the Bronx & Queens for re-electing me to the House despite the millions spent against us, & trusting me to represent you once more.

And then she posted a smiling image of herself along with the other three deputies, accompanied by an ironic but eloquent comment addressed to Trump:

When your sisterhood is so powerful the President of the United States can’t stop thinking about it.

While we wonder if Donald Trump or Joe Biden will be the new president of the United States, the only fact is that America is in the mood for democracy and inclusion, as confirmed by the support for The Squad, increased by about 30,000 votes compared to the 2018 primaries, to which are added the elections of the first transgender senator, Sarah McBride in Delaware, and the first African American gay congressman, Ritchie Torres in New York.
