Tits Up, Hunger magazine's new editorial about breastfeeding
A joyful and fashionable celebration of motherhood
May 28th, 2021
Hunger, the magazine founded by Rankin, turns 10 and celebrates by hosting an editorial dedicated to breastfeeding mothers in the new issue. Kim Howells, international fashion consultant and former creative director of Hunger, in collaboration with photographer Bella Howard, choose the protagonists of the new project that coincides with the launch of her new online channel and podcast series TITS UP, but more importantly, celebrates the strength, beauty and resilience of these women as they juggle work, the demands of being a new mom and breastfeeding.
"I want to celebrate how superhuman us mums are, balancing work, life, and our new little ones whilst breastfeeding on the go! Breastfeeding isn’t always easy and this shoot was a great chance to have some fun and come together. – Said Kim - I wanted mothers to meet mothers and babies to see other babies, to start conversations and build a community."
Howells was inspired by her personal experience: she lost her breast milk after her son Indigo, due to a health issue during birth, was forced to stay in intensive care for 3 weeks. All this happened during the lockdown. Kim needed to increase her milk supply for her son and found help from Hearts Milk Bank, a charity of parents, scientists, milk banking experts and doctors that provides human milk to sick babies or mothers who for whatever reason cannot breastfeed.
At the same time, she heard about a study by Dr Natalie Shenker (co-founder of The Human Milk Foundation) and Professor Amy Brown (Swansea Swansea University) of 1200 mothers with children who were interviewed about their experiences during isolation, which showed that one third of them felt isolated, abandoned or overwhelmed by being alone with their baby and stopped breastfeeding. This data and her experience prompted Kim not only to create the editorial for Hunger, but also to create a platform where all aspects of breastfeeding can be openly discussed, encouraging discussion of both positive and difficult experiences, and helping parents find expert tips and support.
