5 things to know about the new book about Meghan Markle
From antipathy toward Kate Middleton to the backstory of the Vanity Fair cover
July 20th, 2022
After her now-infamous interview with Oprah Winfrey in which she and her new husband Harry accused the Royal Family of racism and indifference toward them, Meghan Markle is back in the spotlight. The Duchess of Sussex is the protagonist of a new book titled Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the war between the Windsors and written by Tom Bower, a journalist known for his unauthorized biographies (he also wrote one about Prince Charles) full of secret details and scandalous backstories. Although the work will not arrive in bookstores until July 21, a small excerpt published by the Times has already raised the hype, revealing backstories about his life as a couple as well as his relationship with Queen Elizabeth, Kate Middleton and the other royals. The picture that emerges from these early pages is of a spoiled, careerist, calculating and opportunistic woman, willing to do anything to gain fame and power. Will this really be the truth? Bower assures that he consulted hundreds of people who had dealings with Meghan, including her first husband, and reported the facts after careful verification. Curious? Here are 5 things we will find out from reading Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the war between the Windsors, as we wait for Netflix to share the reality show based on the lives of the Dukes of Sussex that will provide us with a more direct look at Meghan and Harry.
The snub at the Platinum Jubilee
According to Tom Bower, the Dukes of Sussex would have liked to play a more prominent role during the Platinum Jubilee, so much so that in the days leading up to the 2022 Invictus Games in the Netherlands, Prince Harry allegedly reached out to his grandmother Elizabeth to persuade her to welcome him Meghan, Archie, and Lilibet Diana to the balcony of Buckingham Palace. Request denied even to board the royal carriage. A real snub from The Queen who preferred to treat her grandson and his family like ordinary private citizens. A little revenge against Megxit? If so, Elizabeth would have succeeded because it appears that Markle and Harry were furious at the treatment they received.
The queen's sigh of relief
The funeral of Prince Philip, who passed away in the opening of 2021 at the age of 99, saw the entire family huddled around Elizabeth II. The only absentee: Meghan Markle. The former actress, who was pregnant with her second child at the time, had been advised by doctors not to embark on an overseas trip. Apparently, although she played no role in the decision, the queen was relieved to see only Harry at the funeral. In the pages of Bower's book, it is reported that upon hearing the news of her grandson's arrival without his wife, her Majesty exclaimed "Thank goodness Meghan is not coming!".
The disappointment over Meghan's interview with Vanity Fair
Let's go back to 2017. The world had just learned of her and Harry's relationship when Meghan was offered the cover of Vanity Fair, accompanied by a lengthy interview that was supposed to be about her commitment to women's empowerment, charitable projects, and work as an actress in Suits, but was not supposed to contain any mention of her lovestory with the prince. Too bad that during the chat with journalist Sam Kashner the interviewee mentioned it (in her own words confidentially) stating: "I'm sure there will be a time when we have to come forward, introduce ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time. This is for us. It's part of what makes it so special, that it's just ours. But we are happy. Personally, I love a great love story." The piece came out with the title She's Just Wild about Harry!, focusing just on the new couple and painting Meghan not as a philanthropist and activist, but just as the "prince's girlfriend." Result? Both the Royal Family and Markle furious.
Meghan is disappointed with William and Kate
The international press has filled pages and pages about the alleged antipathy between Meghan and Kate, jealous of each other's attention. According to the new book, there is more than a kernel of reality to these rumors. In particular, Markle laments the lack of support, recognition and generosity from both Kate and William and hates being constantly compared to the perfect sister-in-law.
The flop of the project with Vogue
In 2019 Meghan was guest editor of the September issue of British Vogue entitled Forces For Changes. Only now, however, do we learn that her relationship with the magazine's team and its editor Edward Enninful has been anything but idyllic. Bower says in his book Meghan wanted to make many changes to the issue, without realizing that she had neither the skills nor the experience. In addition, the former actress and her pr were lobbying for the issue to be released earlier in America than in the UK, in order to get more acclaim and good reviews in her home country.
