Lady Gaga wants to buy the rights to Paola Cortellesi's “C’è ancora domani”
Is an American remake on the way?
January 25th, 2024
With more than 5 million tickets sold and total box office takings of over 35 million euros, C'è ancora domani is the most-watched film in Italy in 2023, surpassing titles such as Oppenheimer and Barbie at the top of the box office. However, Paola Cortellesi's directorial debut looks set for even more success and attention, as Lady Gaga is apparently interested in buying the rights to the film to make an American remake. Although there is no official confirmation yet, persistent rumours claim that the star has instructed her collaborators to begin negotiations to secure the rights to the film.
What would have caught the attention of Gaga, who we will soon see on screen as Harley Queen in Joker - Folie à deux, would be above all Delia, the protagonist, her story of female emancipation, her courage to defy the established order and decide for herself, even if only with a small gesture of rebellion that may not change her destiny, but perhaps brings about a real change in her daughter's life. On the other hand, the ingredients of Italian cinema that appeal to the States while tapping into pervasive themes are all there: post-war Rome, violence against women, patriarchy, interesting female characters trying in their own way to challenge the status quo and embark on a path of emancipation. It almost sounds like a Neorealism story, but with a strong connection to current events. Who knows whether Lady Gaga will star in the role of Delia, only produce or perhaps also be behind the camera when the remake is realised.
