What we are waiting to see (or see again) in August on Disney+
From The Bear to Buffy The Vampire Slayer, for a summer of great classics and new discoveries
July 31st, 2024
August is the month of vacations, holidays, the sea, retrograde planets but also, generally, rest. For some people, rest means streaming TV series, watching on the porch with an iced mocktail and popcorn or under the air conditioning with a cat curled up in their lap. Then there are those who prefer a comforting and luxurious rewatch, made possible by all the time we have at our disposal, and those who bravely dive into the new seasons of current cult series. For everyone, here’s a selection of Disney+ releases for the month of August.
The third season of The Bear
The third season of The Bear finally arrives in Italy, a TV series set in the world of catering with Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri. Highly anticipated, discussed, and appreciated: it will be available for streaming starting August 14, and consists of 10 episodes, diving even deeper into Carmy’s mind and into the universe of the restaurant he manages and dreams of despite the trauma.
Only Murders in the Building
On August 27, Selena Gomez and her adventure companions return to our screens. The fourth season of the Disney original series promises plenty of surprises, as the gang moves to Hollywood to follow the filming and the big-screen adaptation of the stories narrated in their podcast.
The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat
For those who appreciate feature films, on August 23 The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat will be available, a Searchlight Pictures film based on the best-selling novel by Edward Kelsey Moore and directed by Tina Mabry. It tells the story of best friends Odette, Barbara Jean, and Clarice, known as The Supremes, who together navigate through joys and sorrows, marriages and children, happiness and sadness, love and loss that test their bond, even when it seems unbreakable.
The Rewatch of Buffy
For those seeking comfort in a series they know by heart, or for those who want to catch up and fill in some gaps, allow me to recommend a breathtaking, epic task: the binge-watching of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a cult series created by Joss Whedon that beneath its horror surface of vampires and demons hides a reflective soul, rich with universal themes like friendship, sacrifice, and personal growth. And then there are the outfits of Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Romantic Comedies from Our Youth
And if the nostalgic mood doesn’t fade, here begins a marathon of rom-coms that defined our youth. There are several choices. 10 Things I Hate About You, an timeless classic that launched the unforgettable and much-missed Heath Ledger, Never Been Kissed, with a very young Drew Barrymore. And then there’s Love, Simon, The Fault in Our Stars, The Last Song.
