The independent bookstores of Milan not to be missed
For a drink with reading, an event or a tour among the new releases
August 30th, 2024
September is just around the corner, and with it comes our craving for coziness. Amidst all the events, to soothe our FOMO and enjoy the cooler weather, we want to stay indoors, wear cardigans, sip hot cappuccinos, and maybe read a few books, or discover new places to do so. Here are some suggestions for independent bookstores in Milan that are worth exploring, whether for a different kind of afternoon or perhaps even a date.
Bookstores in Milan: where you can also have an aperitivo
Sometimes it's nice to take a moment to enjoy a drink in good company, surrounded by books or during a meeting where the latest editorial releases are discussed. You can do this at Verso in Ticinese, and at Gogol & Company, in Lorenteggio, both offering a bar service with tables, as well as meetings, clubs, and events. A similar atmosphere can be found at Noi Libreria in NoLo, which has an outdoor space at the back and a calendar full of events. Some of these bookstores also host book clubs with regular meetings to discuss the latest reads chosen together.
Neighborhood spaces to love and cherish
The categories we propose are, of course, flexible. Modern independent bookstores are shedding their purely retail identity to survive against large chains and the Amazon empire, transforming into community spaces where events can be organized and where the community can be welcomed. An example of this approach is Scamamù in Dergano. Alaska Libreria in the Affori area also aims to bring books and events to the outskirts. For a highly specialized and curated experience, head to Magazzino Musica—affectionately known as MaMu—in Porta Romana, where you can browse music-themed novels and sheet music and enjoy a concert with a glass of wine in hand. How chic!
For witches and astrology enthusiasts: more than just Milan's Esoteric Bookstore
The Esoteric Bookstore, located near the Duomo, offers a wide variety of books and booklets dedicated to astrology, numerology, yoga, crystal healing, and more. It also sells amulets, herbs for burning in our ritual practices, and crystals, complete with explanations of their effects. It's a point of reference for anyone interested in exploring esotericism. But it's not the only one. Hidden away on a side street off Viale Tibaldi is Ecate, a café bookstore that goes beyond the limits of both, dedicating itself to the well-being of mind and body in a holistic way.
