Will Ferrell and Harper Steele: accepting trans people is not that difficult after all
Will & Harper is a testament to the strength of friendship and also something more
September 6th, 2024
"When Harper, Will Ferrell's close friend, comes out as a transgender woman, the two decide to take a road trip together and introduce Harper, and her true self, to the nation." This is the synopsis of Will & Harper, a documentary set to debut in select theaters on September 13 and streaming on Netflix on September 27.
Harper Steele and Will Ferrell, a 30-Year Friendship
Steele and Ferrell have known each other for three decades, since they both worked on Saturday Night Live—Harper as a writer, and Will as a comedian and impersonator on screen. After years of friendship, Harper sent an email to her colleague. "There’s something you need to know," she began. "I’m starting my transition and will be living my life as a woman." After the initial surprise, the two decided to drive across the United States, in part to talk about this change. Along the way, from state to state, they experience funny moments (after all, we’re talking about two very comedic individuals) but also heartfelt conversations, encounters with people and fans, and touching moments.
The Social Reaction and the Importance of Role Models
Will & Harper was screened this year at the Sundance Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, and the Telluride Film Festival. We can’t wait to see it, and we’re not alone. Following the release of the trailer, many viewers expressed their admiration for the project, the friendship between Harper and Will, and overall positive and hopeful feelings for the impact this documentary could have, especially when released on a popular platform like Netflix, featuring a beloved figure like the star of Elf. The message is positive and uplifting, showing us that even in later years, two old friends can overcome challenges simply by talking and taking the time to understand.
