Timothée Chalamet's red carpet looks are a show in their own right
We don't know whether we owe his outfits to a stylist or to the actor, but we do know that we love them
December 18th, 2024
If method dressing—when actors appear in real life or on red carpets dressed like the characters they portray on the big screen—has now become a phenomenon sweeping through Hollywood and its stars for months, in recent weeks, Timothée Chalamet has decided to take it a step further than his colleagues. After Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo dressed exclusively in pink and green for the press tour of Wicked, Austin Butler altering his voice to portray Elvis, or Zendaya consistently walking the red carpets in the colors of the films she promotes, we now have Timothée channeling Bob Dylan so convincingly that we’re checking the calendar to confirm it’s December and not carnival season. Gone are the brown curls and elegant suits—hello to the big blonde bangs, matching mustache, and a checkered scarf.
This is how the Franco-American actor appeared at the New York premiere of A Complete Unknown, a biopic directed by James Mangold that narrates Bob Dylan's rise in the Greenwich Village folk scene of the early 1960s. With windswept bangs, a gray beanie pulled over his head, and a leather jacket with the collar popped, the actor perfectly replicated the rocker’s iconic look from the 2003 Sundance Film Festival. A few days earlier, he attended the Los Angeles premiere of the film wearing a leather jacket covered in badges, accessorized with sunglasses that had “Bob Dylan” scrawled on the lenses in white paint. But it was the small silver Beyblade (a Japanese spinning top from the 2000s) in his hand that ultimately stole the spotlight from the rest of his outfit. Beyond these divine appearances, the actor seems to be in a playful mood lately, riding the wave of his success while sprinkling in ironic nods here and there. Beyond his red carpet and media outings, he even amused the internet by attending his own lookalike contest held in New York a few weeks ago, which has since sparked the trend of “look-alike contests” worldwide.

In short, we can say that Timothée is in a silly goofy mood and has decided to leave behind his image as a serious and mysterious actor to embrace an iconic attitude that undoubtedly charms the public. Perhaps this lightheartedness is thanks to his sweetheart Kylie Jenner, with whom he has been happily in love for two years now, and who attended one of the film premieres accompanied by the internet’s most famous momager, Kris Jenner. But regardless of the source of his playful spirit, this new Timmy, eager to entertain, is a delight. We hope his upcoming appearances will try to rival his 2003 Bob Dylan look, even though he’s set the bar high. Because, let’s be honest, a Timothée sporting Justin Bieber’s hair from the Baby and One Less Lonely Girl era wasn’t on our 2024 bingo card. If the end of 2024 for Timothée was marked by the release of A Complete Unknown, 2025 looks just as promising for the 28-year-old actor, who will star alongside American rapper Tyler, The Creator in Marty Supreme, a film spotlighting the life of professional ping pong player Marty Reisman, known for both his athletic talents and flamboyant style. It’s another chance for Timmy to outdo himself in fashion and serve us red carpet moments that are wilder than ever.
