What is abrasives hair removal pads? Pros and cons to depilatory pads that are all over TikTok

No waxing, no razor, no cream. Among the many methods of hair removal, one has recently emerged on TikTok that has raised doubts and perplexity, so what are we talking about? We are talking about depilatory pads, an innovative method of hair removal ideal as a last-minute remedy (comparable to depilatory cream), which was especially in vogue during the 1990s but is now making a comeback. More than an actual pad, it is a flat rubber accessory on which is placed - in fact - a kind of pad covered with an abrasive surface made of crystals that, when massaged with rotating movements on the skin, removes hair superficially without affecting the bulb. But what are the pros and cons of this so-called abrasive hair removal technique?

As for the pros, it is first of all a low-cost, very practical, painless and eco-friendly method of hair removal - since it is dry - that can be done anywhere (especially on holiday) precisely because it does not require water or energy to heat the wax. It also has an exfoliating action, so while it removes hair it regenerates the skin by removing dead cells and leaves the skin smooth by not causing the hair root to thicken like traditional razors. It can therefore be a good method if you suffer from ingrown hairs and folliculitis.

Coming to the cons, the pads do not tear the hair bulb and therefore do not slow down regrowth as waxing can do, the results are short-lived and after at least three days the hair starts growing again. They must also be used very gently so as not to abrade the skin too much and cannot be used on all areas of the body: the face area is very delicate, as are the armpits and the bikini zone, so use in these areas is not recommended. Last but not least, the depilatory glove removes the most superficial part of the dermis, so it is not a smart remedy to take to the beach when your skin is already stressed by the sun.

In conclusion, if your hair is particularly shaggy and therefore difficult to remove, or your skin is particularly fair and sensitive, it is inadvisable to use this type of hair removal to avoid irritation that is difficult to treat; in all other cases, it can be a valid alternative to the razor when you are in a hurry or out of the house.
