Make-up trends to try this fall From grungecore to kitten eyeliner

Despite the 40°C in the shade giving us the illusion of living in an endless eternal summer, autumn is coming. It’s time to update your wardrobe and beauty routine, make space in your drawers for more earthy tones and cozy fabrics, swap fruity mists for rich creams for the face or body, masks, and hydrating serums for a skincare routine tailored to the upcoming months. It’s a little ritual that repeats itself, giving us an excuse to renew ourselves, reinvent ourselves with just a new dress or new makeup. We look in the mirror, with our tan still golden, a clean face, the nostalgia of vacations, and suddenly, perhaps to overcome the return to daily life, we imagine ourselves with different hair colors, with lipsticks and eyeshadows that give our faces more intensity. This is the beauty of every change of season: having an excuse to experiment with new looks, letting our creativity flow by playing with eyeliner and blush, lipstick and mascara, taking inspiration from the FW24 runways, celebrities, TikTok, and Instagram.

Here are the makeup trends to try this fall.

Kitten eyeliner

The YSL Fall24 campaign featuring Bella Hadid with a perfect winged eyeliner confirms it: it's time to add eyeliner, preferably black, to your shopping list. Whether you prefer liquid or pen format depends on your skill. The key is to make sure the line and final flick are thin. After a period dominated by thick and dramatic wings, the trend now favors a barely noticeable line, placed right at the corner of the eyes, almost blending with the lashes. Besides Miss Hadid, other fans of this minimalist makeup include Mia Goth and Zoë Kravitz, two celebs known for their talent and coolness. So, it’s time to practice. The technique for achieving the kitten eyeliner is quite simple: draw a short, slim line along the lash line, then use a small motion to create a thin wing.

Berry Lips

While eye makeup becomes minimal with a slight line of eyeliner and often without mascara, the lips take center stage, tinted in all shades of berries, from deep cranberry red to darker, almost vampy tones. The season's trend favors matte textures, almost powdery, but depending on your taste, you can adopt a more decadent or glamorous style by adding a gloss for shine. This is according to French makeup artist Violette, but also celebrities like Chappell Roan, Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter, and Anya Taylor-Joy, who use the same shades on their cheeks and eyelids. This fall's lipstick should be applied precisely, preferably with a brush, tracing a heart shape or with a delicately blended outline. The result? Kissable lips

Sculpting with Light

Just take a look at the last two seasons of Schiaparelli, where Pat McGrath gave models luminous, almost otherworldly skin, to understand that this fall we want to shine. Some call it dewy skin, others pearl skin, but the goal is the same: to capture light and reflect it to sculpt the face. How? By using specific products like highlighters, pearlescent creams, and transparent balms. Unlike contouring, which uses darker tones in powder or cream form to create shadows and depth, this technique is all about layering and enhancing the natural radiance of the skin, giving the face a soft, diffused glow. The result is an effortlessly radiant look that enhances the face's natural structure.

Grunge Makeup

The 1990s and the grunge aesthetic are destined to remain a key inspiration for fashion and beauty. They come back, updated to 2024 smokey eyes and messy make-up, but with a slightly softer approach, filling our makeup cases with dark pencils and eyeshadows. The secret is imperfection, as taught by Kate Moss, Courtney Love, Winona Ryder and the other muses of this style. Green light to smoky powders, black, gray, brown, blue, amethyst, to be layered and blended, applied almost randomly and defined by smudged eyeliner. Blush is banned and lipstick is optional. What matters is the attitude.

Boyfriend Blush

We already anticipated it by predicting the trends of 2024: flushed blush is a must. The flushed cheek effect loved by Hailey BieberSabrina Carpenter and makeup artist Patrick Ta will remain indispensable in the coming months. The technique to follow in the coming months is called boyfriend blush, and it mimics, with an extra-generous application of blush even on the underside of the cheeks, the natural, flushed look that boys' cheeks have after a rugby game or a walk outside. Are you already stocking up on blush? It's fine in any shade and formulation, liquid, cream or powder.
