Are you ready to give up black mascara?
The burgundy mascara is the next beauty trend
September 9th, 2024
There are those who never wear it, preferring to let their lips or eyes steal the spotlight, and those who won’t leave the house without it, convinced that a simple swipe on their lashes is enough to tackle the day with style. We’re talking about mascara, a product with a millennia-old history that has been a must-have in our beauty kits from Ancient Egypt to today. It’s the secret, passed down for centuries, to lengthen and thicken lashes, giving our eyes greater definition and allure. The most loved shade? Black, but maybe not for long, as another hue is gaining popularity: after brown, burgundy is on the rise.

Everyone’s obsessed with brown mascara, especially burgundy
Ever since Millie Bobby Brown called the L'Oréal Paris Voluminous Burgundy Mascara her "favorite" in a Vogue Beauty Secrets video a few months ago, the trend has been on the rise. Thanks to the influence of the Red Wine make-up and vampire looks, more and more makeup artists and creators have started showcasing and praising the benefits of this shade, which sits between brown, red, and purple. "Burgundy is the new black", declares a creator on TikTok. "It’s super, super subtle and makes my brown eyes pop," says another user comparing black and burgundy mascara, stating that the new shade softens the gaze, similar to chocolate brown. In other videos, it’s hailed as perfect to pair with green eyes, as it enhances them, making them sparkle and shine. The burgundy mascara colors the lashes, but in a discreet way, appealing to those looking for something different without going overboard. Even minimal makeup lovers will fall for it, fearing that a color other than black might be too bold. This rich, intense shade seems much more wearable than other colored mascaras, like blue, making it perfect for any occasion and place, from the office to a romantic date. Still think it’s "too much"? Experts recommend applying it only on the lower lashes.

Who suits burgundy mascara?
Bordeaux, burgundy, plum, and deep red suit everyone, but they especially flatter green eyes, which are beautifully highlighted by the contrast of these shades. They also pair wonderfully with hazel or dark eyes. Burgundy mascara gives dark eyes a softer, more delicate appearance. A single swipe is enough to create a softened, gentle gaze that remains captivating. Experts suggest caution with blue eyes, as reddish mascara, paired with very fair skin and light eyes, could emphasize redness. However, makeup is all about personal preference, as is how to style burgundy mascara. Celebrity makeup artist Georgina Partington loves pairing it with dark pink lids, chocolate eyeshadow, burgundy eyeliner, nude or pale pink lips, and a soft peach-pink blush. Her colleague, Stevi Christine, prefers a more minimal approach and suggests achieving a dewy skin look with tinted moisturizer and a neutral cream or liquid blush, followed by a warm-toned bronzer, finishing with natural pink lips. As we’ve seen with the red wine make-up trend and vampy aesthetics, burgundy mascara pairs perfectly with a bold, monochromatic makeup look, playing with various shades of red on the eyes, cheeks, and lips. How would you wear it?
