Birkenstock x Proenza Schouler capsule collection
Inspired by utility clothing and old-school sneakers
March 10th, 2020
After Valentino and Rick Owens, Birkenstock joins forces with Proenza Schouler for a new capsule inspired by utility clothing. First unveiled during the New York Fashion Week of last September, the collaboration blended perfectly with the "chic commuter atmosphere" of the SS20 collection created by Jack McCullough and Lazaro Hernandez.
The duo reinvented two iconic German brand models, Arizona and Milan, with a more sporty and practical design. The metal buckles have been replaced by Velcro closures and embellished with thick contrasting stitching, a nod to the visual language of vintage sneakers and combat boots.
We’ve always been attracted to old-school sneakers that use Velcro straps as closures, and we thought that doing something like this on a Birkenstock could be interesting - Hernandez said. We wanted to keep its spirit, its hardcore functionality, but reduce the whole thing down to its pure essence.
The result is a series of unisex sandals, made in mirror-polished calfskin leather that recalls Proenza Schouler's clothes and comes in black, white, ochre and silver.
The Birkenstock x Proenza Schouler collection is available exclusively from Net-a-Porter until March 20th, then it will arrive on proenzaschouler.com and at selected retailers worldwide.
The collaboration was launched with an ad campaign shot by Juergen Teller ft. art director Peter Miles, starring the model Kiki Willems.
