10 iconic movie looks to copy this summer
From the hippie mood of "Midsommar" to the 2000s streetstyle of "Honey"
July 28th, 2020
This year, as never before, the desire for summer, to wear frivolous flower dresses, shorts and headbands in the hair, to walk barefoot eating ice cream, is great. So why not make it even more special by taking inspiration from the most beautiful outfits seen on the big screen? For a few weeks each of us can forget the melancholy of recent times and pretend to be someone else: Brigitte Bardot sunbathing on Capri, Emmanuelle Béart eating ice cream, Jessica Alba dancing hip hop, Scarlett Johansson falling in love with a Spanish painter, Sarah Jessica Parker getting lost in the Abu Dhabi souk, Margot Robbie becoming Sharon Tate.
Here are 10 iconic movie looks to copy this summer.
Le Mépris (1963)
Jean-Luc Godard brings Il disprezzo of Alberto Moravia to the screen and turns the end of a marriage into a sensual comment on cinema itself, on the relationship between compromise, fame and beauty. Starring Michel Piccoli, a beautiful Brigitte Bardot and Casa Malaparte burned by the sun of Capri.
Badlands (1973)
Terrence Malick's directorial debut is one of the most influential outlaw-couple road movies ever. The story, set in the late 1950s, is a classic: teenage Holly (Sissy Spacek) falls in love with Kit (Martin Sheen), a 25-year-old James Dean, but when her father fights against their relationship, the boy shoots him and sets his house on fire. The couple packs their bags and flees through the vast, deserted cornfields of South Dakota, killing anyone who gets in their way. The violence is amplified by the delicate, ethereal and girly look of Sissy Spacek's character. Strawberry blonde hair, light complexion, freckles and blue eyes, she embodies the portrait of childhood innocence, wearing candy-coloured dresses with ruffles, puffed sleeves, buttons and moccasins with socks on her feet. A doll who watches and participates impassively in the crimes of her boyfriend who, in the typical 50's rebel style, always has a white tee and a pair of jeans.
L'Enfer (1994)
Inspired by Henri-Georges Clouzot's unfinished project, Claude Chabrol follows the obsessive jealousy of a small hotel owner for his young wife, Nelly. The woman, played by Emmanuelle Béart, perfectly embodies the mood of the South of France: flower dresses, one-piece costumes, lace lingerie, headbands, cat-eye and red lipstick. It's the same style loved by it-girls like Jeanne Damas and recreated in her store Rouje.
How Stella Got Her Groove Back (1998)
Angela Bassett, who in recent years became popular among the Netflix generation for TV series such as 911 and the AHS saga, is a great actress. Although this isn't her best film, she's perfect to play the role of Stella Payne, a successful broker and a single mother who during a summer trip with her best friend Delilah (Whoopi Goldberg) in Jamaica starts a relationship with a boy who' s twenty years younger (Taye Diggs). As passion explodes between the two, Stella blooms and from severe office outfits she goes into neon bikinis, crop tops, beads, wide-brimmed straw hats, seashell necklaces...a series of looks that seem stolen from the summer shots posted by Instagram's influencers.
Honey (2003)
When Jessica Alba was not yet a successful businesswoman or a TikTok queen, she starred in movies like Honey. As Honey Daniels (although the role was written for Aaliyah, who unfortunately died before filming) she was at her best: she taught hip-hop dancing to black kids at a community center; she danced for Fabolous and Missy Elliott; she wore a series of street looks screaming 2000s, made of crop tops, baggy pants, hoop earrings and Nike pieces. Another highlight was her best friend Gina's outfits. If you feel dare try copying her body chain.
Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008)
Woody Allen shoots Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall, Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem travelling around Barcelona, between polyamorous relationships and city views. Three different women compete for the attention of the restless Spanish painter Juan Antonio, each with her own style. Cristina/ Scarlett plays the role of the normcore girl, all t-shirts, basic shirts and relaxed fit jeans; while Vicky/Rebecca prefers the more refined understatement typical of a certain American upper class. The most interesting is Maria Elena/Penelope with her daytime slip dresses that look like a tribute to rock'n roll it-girl like Marianne Faithfull and Courtney Love.
Sex And The City 2 (2010)
Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha and Miranda on holiday in Abu Dhabi, among colorful prints, maxi dress, scarves, sunglasses and kajal. Need anything more? Sarah Jessica Parker in a Dior t-shirt and big skirt.
Café Society (2016)
Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart in a complex love story set in the golden age of Hollywood. Another comedy directed by Woody Allen full of outfits to copy. If you love the 30s and vintage fashion you will love Kristen's clothes: her jumpsuits, knotted shirts and her round sunglasses. All made by Karl Lagerfeld exclusively for Chanel, which recall the looks worn by Mademoiselle Coco on the French Riviera, with Boy Cape.
Midsommar (2019)
Midsommar is one of the recent years' most popular horror movie. The credit goes to Ari Aster's directing, Florence Pugh's performance, the bright Swedish campaign and the cast's pseudo-hippie outfits. Warning: after watching the film, you might want to buy seventies mood white dresses with colorful embroideries.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019)
Telling the story of faded television star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), Quentin Tarantino paints a vivid fresco of the late 1960s, when the Manson Family's murder of Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) blows away the positivity and lightheartedness of the flower power generation. The costumes created by Arianne Phillips, including denim, Hawaiian shirts, optical patterns, paisleys, crop tops and mini dresses, evoke the same atmosphere.
