The Chunkier, The Better: it's still platform mania this SS22
Here's how and with whom the trend evolved in the 90s
March 24th, 2022
This summer, the only desire is to stay a foot off the ground: the chunky heel has been showing up constantly on the runways of the Spring Summer 2022 collections, and to the delight of Millennials and members of a late Gen Z the link the return of Y2K fashion is really direct. The influence of the late '90s in today's fashion is a well-established constant, aided by the wave of nostalgia that accompanies uncertain times like the present. Low waists and skinny eye-brows are already a tangible reality in everyday life, so is the emo and makeup trend about to return to the streets, and with them chunky heels? Maybe so, but the history of the platform, was not born with the desired Bratz all lipgloss and platform.the footwear has its roots in the Persia of the seventeenth century, as a riding shoe: in battle, the knights, used the heel to fix their position in the stirrups in order to pull the arrows more effectively.
Today to ride the trends the ancient utility of this showy footwear is linked to a strong desire to appear, the same that distinguished the fashion icons of the 90s as the impossible to forget Britney Spears and the Pussycat Dolls, but to make the platform sandals the spearhead of the decade was Hillary Duff, who with the orange flip-flop wedges worn as the character Lizzie McGuire marked the conjunction between wedges and platform for Millennials tuned every afternoon on entertainment channels for kids: Who hasn't coveted her orange flip-flop wedges? It is no coincidence that today the platform is back on the feet of all the stars born in the second half of the '90s who probably welcomed with open arms this trend to correspond with their childhood: Dua Lipa and Kendall Jenner, both born in '95 are two of the most fond of the trend.
To clear customs of the eternal return of the heel suspiciously comfortable thanks to the height of the platform that counterbalances the distribution of weight on the high and thick heel was the brand Nodaleto, now primary reference when it comes to the platform style thanks to the chunky and curved heel of Bulla Babies. According to Google Trends the brand splashed to the top of searches after Bella Hadid was photographed in January 2020 wearing some of their knee-high boots and chunky heel. Today, Lyst states that the model has achieved a monthly page view of about 3.5K.
It is with SS22 that the trend becomes a fashion phenomenon, to the point of appearing on the main runways of Fashion Weeks in a variety of forms. For example, "at the third" with the tri platform of Versace, in EVA material for Miu Miu, in the candy pink version for Alexander Wang... This trend may or may not be liked, but it is certain that: it is everywhere starting this Spring, it gives a few inches and is easily hidden under the leg of the jeans, it is perfect for a total-look from hit me baby one more time, and in the end it is also super comfortable.
