Trend SS23: the must-have bags of the moment
XXL, wristlets, baguette, with romantic and sparkling details
April 11th, 2023
Never underestimate the power of attraction of a handbag. SS23 models have the power to enhance our looks, becoming as much a protagonist as a dress or a precious piece of jewellery. The secret for the new season is to focus on striking colours, versatile shapes, high-quality materials and brands that are as essential and luxurious as our budget allows. However, there are solutions for every budget and also different trends to draw inspiration from. In the coming months, we will once again turn to oversized accessories with romantic details such as flowers and bows, shimmering textures and elongated shapes.
Here are the handbag trends for SS23 to look out for on your next shopping session.
Super sized
After a summer spent with mini models that could barely hold a lipstick, it's time to rediscover XXL sizes. Following the example of Saint Laurent's Icare, which drove celebrities crazy last year, maxi bags are back, taking over the SS23 catwalks from Louis Vuitton, Proenza Schouler, Altuzarra, Jil Sander, Luar, Michael Kors, Tommy Hilfiger and many other brands. Plus-size shoppers we'd all love to have definitely include Andiamo by Bottega Veneta and Prisma by Marni. The former stands out for its distinctive "woven" pattern, versatility and capacity, making it the perfect gender-neutral accessory in which to stash all our essentials (or superfluous items) to get us through our days. The Prisma bag from the Marni SS23 Vol.2 collection, on the other hand, plays with soft textures and eye-catching colours, a hidden metal closure and an adjustable shoulder strap. If you like the pattern but not the size, there's always the smaller version.
Baguette
2023 was the year of the Baguette by Fendi, which celebrated its 25th anniversary with a fashion show attended by many celebrities of the fashion world such as Sarah Jessica Parker and Linda Evangelista. Its elongated and rectangular shape has influenced the design of many other models that may not be as iconic but are always cool, like the models by JW Anderson, Staud or Ganni. Among the most interesting novelties of the moment to put on your shopping list are Le Bambimou by Jacquemus and Wanda by Ferragamo. The former is a lambskin leather model with a rectangular and slightly puffy shape, a magnetic flap closure, a gold logo plaque, a double shoulder strap that offers different styling options and many shades to choose from. The Wanda, on the other hand, created by Salvatore Ferragamo's daughter Marchesa Fiamma in the 1970s in honour of her mother with a design inspired by the metropolitan skyline, has been reinterpreted by Maximilian Davis with new geometric proportions and glossy finishes that give it a modern minimalist touch.
Buckle up
Belts are back in the spotlight this season, whether as accessories, as bases for tops and dresses or as embellishments for bags. Buckles add a rugged, practical touch to bags made of soft leather or denim. A few examples? Prada's Moon, a reinterpretation of an iconic model from the 2000s, features a curved silhouette and is adorned with a large central metal buckle with an enamelled triangle logo and the sail loop borrowed from the sailing world. It is available in a colour palette that ranges from wave blue to cedar yellow, geranium and mango to classic black and white. Equally covetable is Givenchy's Voyou model, which debuted on the SS23 catwalk. Creative director Matthew M. Williams combined French and American style codes, opting for a V-shape that reflects the sophistication of the Left Bank, a fine-grained texture of tumbled calfskin, adjustable straps and buckles as embellishments.
Al polso e a mano
What do Coach's Tabby, Cult Gaia's Dory feather, Genny's Fortune bag, Ganni's Ruch handle bag and Halitè's many delightful designs have in common? They are worn in the hand, or better still on the wrist, as if they were little bijoux that make even the simplest look unique with their mini shapes and cute designs, often made special by precious details. So every now and then we leave the hobo bags and shoulder bags in the wardrobe and choose a small handbag that we hold in our hands like a treasure. The inspiration for SS23? The bracelets from Coach's Fun and Jelly collection.
True romance
Spring 2023 makes way for a bit of romance with bows, ruffles, feathers, blooms and flowers adorning the new bags. From Moschino and Alaïa's heart-shaped bags to Acne Studios' styles with bows and kittens and Dries Van Noten's satin clutches, the latest fashion shows aim to bring delicate, fun and a little bit bitchy accessories to our everyday looks to make every moment special and super sweet. And if you want to change the look of your ordinary bag, you can do as Loewe does and add an anthurium or a rose to the handle.
Bling bling
Y2K style is with us again this spring, challenging us to shine brighter than the sun. And how? With the help of a bag studded with crystals, sequins or metallic textures and colours. On the catwalk, LaQuan Smith, Valentino, Versace, Fendi, Dolce & Gabbana and many others have done it. And no matter what time of day, the glittery bags are worn from morning to night, just like when we were kids and stole mum's glittery handbag.
