The Chanel archive looks we'd like to see on the Met Gala 2023 red carpet
From sequin-covered wedding costumes to iconic black and white creations
April 26th, 2023
In less than a week it will be the first Monday in May, the day when the Met Gala traditionally takes place. The 2023 edition of the most anticipated event of the year will be dedicated to Karl Lagerfeld, with an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Tisch Gallery from 5 May to 16 July 2023 that will trace the designer's evolution from winning the Woolmark Prize in 1954 to his retirement in 2019, and, most importantly, a red carpet whose dress code is "In honour of Lagerfeld", a generic designation that gives the evening's guests plenty of choice. What the stars and goths of the fashion world will wear is the question on everyone's mind these days, leaving room for all sorts of theories. While it's easy to imagine that black and white will dominate, many are willing to bet that someone will mimic Lagerfeld's look, the iconic look of a black and white suit and hair pulled back into a small ponytail. Everyone else, used to the pomp and eccentric touches of past editions, will be hoping for a slightly less literal interpretation of the theme and more research within Lagerfeld's many creations over the course of his prolific career for Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi and, above all, Chanel.
Although the German designer has worked for several brands, it is undeniable that his dresses that are most etched in the collective imagination are those designed for Chanel, and it is the house's archive that we expect guests at the 2023 Met Gala to draw from, starting with Anna Wintour and the four co-chairs who will be involved in the organisation, along with the director of Vogue US, namely Dua Lipa, Penélope Cruz, Michaela Coel and Roger Federer. If we fantasise a little and rummage through the archives of the brand founded by Madame Coco, we dream of seeing Dua Lipa climbing the steps of the Met dressed as Vittoria Ceretti for Spring 2019 couture, a bride in a one-piece silver sequined swimming costume, or Penélope Cruz as a bare-backed femme fatale in black, like Nicole Kidman in Baz Luhrmann's 2004 commercial "Le Film". Michaela Coel, on the other hand, could opt for a mini dress with a sheer effect from the autumn 1991 couture or with a dramatic feather creation like the spring 2004 couture wedding dress, while for Elle Fanning, who is one of the guests already confirmed, the top with a voluminous pink skirt from the spring 1999 couture collection would be perfect. And Kim Kardashian? When the SKIMS fouder hits the red carpet next Monday in May, it would be interesting to see her in the athleisure outfit Linda Evangelista wore on the catwalk FW in 1991.
G-Club has selected some outfits from the Chanel archive that we would love to see on the red carpet of the Met Gala 2023.
