Fruit print to make summer wardrobe more fun
Here's everything you need to know about summer's coolest print
August 3rd, 2023
"Florals for spring? Groundbreaking". Miranda Priestly from "The Devil Wears Prada" ironically expresses the monotony of the floral pattern in the spring summer collections. The typical summer dress is light, fluttery and arguably floral. Each of us has at least one in our wardrobe. Timeless or boring?
Fruity patterns are the most fun and creative version of the floral pattern. You can decorate the look with bold graphics or small splashes of color. And the fabric becomes a sheet that wraps the patterns around the body. Then all you need is a simple garment with minimal, clean lines to accentuate the printed pattern and create a balanced combination. A print or, in technical terms, pattern, whether allover or placed, is a very simple way to add personality to an outfit.
The favourites are lemons and cherries, followed by strawberries, bananas and oranges. We are not in the grocery shop, but on the catwalk. The passion for fruit has always been the summer fashion's crush, especially in this moment.
Fruit print in fashion
Fruity patterns have always been synonymous with summer and light-heartedness. As early as 1961, Marilyn Monroe wore a dress with a cherry pattern on the set of The Misfits. The explosive moment for fruity prints came around 2010, when they became the protagonists of the visual language of brands like Moschino and Dolce & Gabbana. Impossible to forget Prada's iconic banana print, which was presented in the SS in 2011 and is now the fashion house's most coveted archive piece.
Celebrities who wear fruit print
Our dear celebrities wear fruity prints like all-over cherries on their dresses or bikinis, chosen by Rihanna, Kaia Gerber and Kim Kardashian. Dua Lipa and Margot Robbie, on the other hand, love strawberries. Even in a maxi version printed on a top.
Fruit prints in recent collections
Fruit pops up on trees as in the latest collections, taken up by designers more or less true to life. Prints with a photographic effect, like Collina Strada's fruit salad, or stylized cherries arranged neatly on Benetton suits. Etro's appliquéd apples, which become almost abstract shapes, or bunches of grapes forming a black & white pattern on Area's suit (which dedicates SS 23 to the fruit theme). Or traditional cherry patterns on the romantic gowns by Carolina Herrera (also worn by Emily in Paris) or in a pop version by Moschino.
Fruit-themed garments and accessories to buy for this summer
Not only maxi print dresses for a flamboyant look, but also small fruity accessories. To add a fun touch to the outfit, embellishments such as embroidery or beaded appliqués that pick up on the juiciest fruits are very trendy. Or hair clips in the shape of cherries. In the galley you can also find the Cormio top from the collection worn on Ig by Dua Lipa.
