The Met Gala is about to make a comeback. As every year, on the first Monday of May, the crème de la crème of the fashion world and the current celebrities will don their most beautiful and dramatic outfits to grace the red carpet of the most anticipated event of the year. The fateful date is about three months away, but the hype is already through the roof. Sponsored by TikTok, with the support of Loewe and Condé Nast, the most anticipated soirée of the year is already capturing attention with the first details starting to emerge. The guest list, who will compete for the best outfit, is still top secret, but the theme, dress code, and co-chairs have already been revealed.
Here's everything we know (so far) about the Met Gala 2024.
When and where will the Met Gala 2024 take place?
The Met Gala always takes place on the first Monday of May. This time, the event date is May 6, 2024. On that evening, the crème de la crème of the fashion world, adorned in sparkling outfits and special creations, will ascend the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Who will be the co-chairs of the Met Gala 2024?
Penélope Cruz, Michaela Coel, Roger Federer, Dua Lipa, who joined Anna Wintour last year, pass their co-chair scepters to a new quartet of celebrities, including Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, and Chris Hemsworth. Can you already imagine the imaginative and Instagram-friendly looks they'll showcase on May 6?
What is the theme of the Met Gala 2024?
Before becoming a showcase for the boldest looks, the Met Gala originated as a fundraiser held during the annual opening of the new exhibition at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Last year's theme was dedicated to Karl Lagerfeld, while the spring 2024 exhibition is titled Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion. No, there's no reference to Disney. The theme revolves around vintage garments preserved at the Met, considered too fragile to be worn, whose beauty will be brought to life through cutting-edge technologies allowing their study and preservation through video animation, light projections, soundscape, or artificial intelligence. From May 10, 250 vintage garments will be exhibited, ranging from an Elizabethan-era English corset from the 17th century to 21st-century pieces by Stella McCartney and Connor Ives, divided into three sub-themes: Earth, Sea, and Sky. Among the pieces on display are models by Charles Frederick Worth, Schiaparelli, Dior, Givenchy, and others.
What is the dress code?
The dress code for the Met Gala 2024 will be The Garden of Time, seamlessly connecting with the theme of the exhibition and its presentation: "Using the natural world as a visual metaphor for the transience of fashion, the exhibition will explore cyclical themes of rebirth and renewal, breathing new life into these historical objects through creative and immersive activations designed to convey the scents, sounds, textures, and movements of garments that can no longer directly interact with the body." The inspiration comes from The Garden of Time, a short story written in 1962 by J.G. Ballard, considered one of the fathers of 1960s Science Fiction novels. The story features Count Axel and his wife, living in a splendid villa overlooking a marvelous "garden of flowers with translucent leaves and stalks sparkling like crystal." Ballard doesn't describe an idyllic Eden but an artificial, ephemeral, and dystopian paradise threatened by "a chaotic and intrusive crowd."
What will celebrities wear at the Met Gala 2024?
The most obvious interpretation would be to flaunt a floral garment with a visually impactful presence, similar to those presented for SS24 by Marni and Simone Rocha or the haute couture by Giambattista Valli and the designs by Simone Rocha for Jean Paul Gaultier. Remember the models parading with silver roses in hand and face jewels? It would be a perfect look, with the right nod to Coquette aesthetics. Celebrities could also draw from Dries Van Noten's archive, such as SS14 or SS17, as well as Chanel's SS15, or transform into a bouquet as seen in Moschino's SS18. They might even delve further back in time, revealing forgotten garments. The Met exhibition features several looks by Alexander McQueen, including the mini-dress with monarch butterfly wings from the SS11 collection. Will someone wear it?
