Billie Eilish announces an Italian stop on her tour
For the occasion, let's analyze her unique and inimitable style
April 30th, 2024
19 years old, a great talent, an album (When we all fall asleep, where do we go?) at the top of the charts around the world, loved by millions of fans and brilliant artists such as Thom Yorke or Julia Roberts. Billie Eilish has all the skills to be the coolest girl of the moment. Even a unique and recognizable style.
The young singer, in fact, is gaining more and more global attention not only thanks to her moody pop hits, but also with her outfits, genderless and with strong streetwear influences that remind of certain aesthetic choices of Kurt Cobain (according to Dave Grohl, former drummer of Nirvana, the similarities between the two are many), M.I.A. and Avril Lavigne. Billie's wardrobe is made up of suits, sweatshirts, bermuda shorts and pants, XXL garments, full of prints, logomania and often dipped in neon colors (especially green and orange). Complete the look with bold accessories and the inevitable sneakers on her feet, such as her beloved Air Jordan 15. It's no coincidence that the brand chose her as the testimonial for the advertising campaign for the Air Jordan 1 Explorer XX.
Unintentional muse of the Gen Z, Eilish is contended by designers who want her to wear their creations or have her as a partner for capsule collections. The latest project, which has just arrived in stores, is the collaboration with Bershka, but before the Spanish company, it was the turn of Freak City for 10 a line of clothing inspired by graffiti.
Among her favorite brands there are Marcelo Burlon, Y-3, Supreme, Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton, MCM and Gucci, a label that, as evidenced by her official Instagram profile, the singer wears following her personal aesthetic taste and not only as a trend imposed by the fashion system.
If, for the make-up, she almost always opts for authentic and raw beauty, made of thick and wild eyebrows, curved mascara and a touch of pink blush on the cheeks to experiment, instead, with the color of the hair (black, gray, blonde, blue), she dares more with the outfits. There is a clear ironic and playful vein, almost "cartoon" and bizarre in her looks, whether they are unique pieces created for her or looks created by her herself by recycling accessories, modifying clothes or wearing them in an alternative way, as when she turned an Ikea bag into a T-shirt or when she showed off a total LV look with an anti-smog mask (one of her favorite accessories).
Loved and at the same time criticized, her style, as she has explained several times in many interviews, is also a sort of "armor" that she adopts to defend herself from the intrusiveness of others. Also, for this reason, she wears very wide garments, as she revealed in the campaign #MyCalvins by Calvin Klein where she says:
What I like about just dressing like I’m 800 sizes bigger than I am is it kind of gives nobody the opportunity to judge what your body looks like. I don’t want to give anyone the excuse of judging, and not—and it’s not like everyone’s going to judge you, but they all do in their head [...] I want layers and layers and layers. And I want to be mysterious. You don’t know what’s underneath, and you don’t know what’s on top.
Billie's discretion and her willingness not to be an example to anyone became even more evident after the star pointed out in an interview with V Magazine that even compliments to her style conceal negative and sexist connotations. These are her words:
[Even] from my parents, [the] positive [comments] about how I dress have this slut-shaming element. Like, ‘I am so glad that you are dressing like a boy, so that other girls can dress like boys, so that they aren’t sluts.’ That’s basically what it sounds like to me. And I can’t [overstate how] strongly I do not appreciate that, at all.
Billie has talent, good taste, but also a brilliant mind.
