Miu Miu presents the new short film "In my room"
This and the other Miu Miu Women's Tales movies will be available in streaming on MUBI
September 9th, 2020
Miu Miu Women's Tales, Miu Miu's project exploring 21st-century femininity portrayed by some of the most intense and original contemporary authors, returns to the Venice Film Festival. On September 6, during Giornate Degli Autori, the Milanese brand presented the new short film by Mati Diop, competing at the Cannes Film Festival and winner in 2019 of the Special Grand Prix of the Jury with her debut movie Atlantique. In my room was created and directed by the French filmmaker during the lockdown period:
When Miu Miu proposed to me to make a film for Women’s Tales during confinement, in the midst of a health and social crisis, I thought it was a very delicate exercise but also a challenge that confronted me with essential questions about my practice as a filmmaker. What story can I tell now, with minimal means, alone in my studio, that resonates with what the world is going through while being intimate?
Although she developed the project in this strange pandemic scenario, filming her neighbors from the 24th floor window of a building located in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, Diop started working on this home-movie collecting and listening to audio recordings of dialogues made with her grandmother, Maji, over the last three years before she died.
From September 7th, after the Venetian preview and before arriving on miumiu.com, Diop's work can be watched in streaming on the platform MUBI. Along with In my room, the rest of the complete Women's Tales collection, which includes works by Agnés Varda, Chloë Sevigny, Haifaa Al-Mansour, Ava DuVernay and Lynne Ramsay, is also be available on MUBI.
