Miley Cyrus' new rock'n roll home
A mix of artwork, design pieces and bold technicolor furnishings
April 30th, 2021
Just under a year ago, Miley Cyrus bought a 6800-square-foot mansion in the Hidden Hills area of Los Ageles with six bedrooms and seven bathrooms for nearly $5 million and hired her mother Tish to do the interior design. The end result, previewed at Architectural Digest, is a home that fully reflects the eclectic, bold and maximalist character and aesthetic that accompanies the star both in her outfits on stage, on the red carpet, but also in everyday life.
People make bold choices in their lives, and sometimes those gambles work and bring you good fortune, and sometimes they don’t. But it’s a risk she’s willing—and I’m willing—to take in our lifestyle, and that is reflected in the design.
Said Mrs. Cyrus, pointing out how daring, focusing on a unique style and far from the zen minimalism loved by other celebrities, was natural for the singer.
Built in 1957, on the outside the building, although it maintains the classic East Coast vibes, looks almost like a ranch with the structure covered with white wooden planks, classic elements such as huge arched windows and a large plot of 1.2 acres that also includes a lagoon-style pool.
Kitchen and dining room.
This is definitely the brightest area in the whole house. Everything is based on the black and white two-tone color scheme, from the wall units and the large central island reminiscent of those in a country house to the small circular table designed by Mat Sanders, surrounded by zebra-covered chairs. As mother and daughter confess, the dining room is often used for business meetings rather than family lunches. The focal point of the room are Lawson Fenning chairs arranged around the rectangular table and lined in a shimmering Pindler's Prism fabric that echoes the work of California painter and sculptor Orrin Whalen hanging on the wall.
Living area.
Black dominates here, invading everything from the walls to the Monumental steel chandelier by Blackman Cruz, hanging above the custom lounge chairs and glass coffee table by Lawson Fenning. The dark tones are spiced up by the cobalt velvet sofas and, above all, by the Anemone armchair created by Giancarlo Zema for Giovanetti, made of fabric, steel, polyurethane and colored in shades of pink and purple.
I spend a lot of my time in that chair with my dogs—some people call it the peacock chair; some people call it the clam chair. - Said Miley, adding that the living room is one of her favorite open space areas as well - I love the openness of the space. I love that when friends are cooking in the kitchen, when we’re watching TV or movies and someone’s at the bar, when someone goes to play the piano, we can all be together even if we’re not all sitting directly in the same space.
The details reflect the star's love for more playful art such as his vibrantly colored "slippery" sculptures by American Dan Lam or Takashi Murakami's still life.
Studio and glam-room lounge.
Miley's studio follows the same living room play between dark tones and technicolor accents. The highlights which catch the eye? The most unique is definitely the psychedelic ceiling painted by Brian Robles, followed by the zebra fabric curtains by Jim Thompson Fabrics, the vintage 60's illuminated signs by Targetti Sankey and the yellow Shit chair from the Toiletpaper line for Seletti.
This is probably one of my favorite rooms because you can’t go in here and be unhappy.
Said Tish Cyrus when talking about Miley's glam lounge room with its mix'n match of pieces more reminiscent of a vintage store than a room in an L.A. mansion: Lucite coffee table, 1981 Ettore Sottsass Carlton bookcase, vintage Murano Curvati glass rainbow light, big mouth chair, Gucci heels and even the wig the singer wore when she played the role of Ashley O in Black Mirror.
Bedroom.
The real fil rouge of Miley's new home? Definitely, the zebra pattern that we find here in the painting portraying Blondie in one of his many animalier looks, hanging above the stainless steel and brass bed of the 80s. Completing the wild mood are Milo Baughman's bedspread and swivel chair, both in faux fur.
Bathrooms.
The inspiration for the main bathroom was Amangiri, the luxurious resort in Canyon Point, Utah, where Miley took refuge with her sister and mother after the end of her relationship with Kaitlynn Carter. Here everything has been designed to instill serenity, from the wall decorated with Henri Matisse's Blue Nude III to the enormous bathtub by Vast Studio, placed under a large glass window.
Garden.
The outdoors of the villa, with its many lounge areas and patio under which to cook and dine al fresco, make Miley feel like she's in Nashville, where she grew up:
I’m from Nashville, so I grew up on a 500-acre farm with my dad, and we didn’t have any neighbors. None of us ever had shoes or clothes on. We just ran around the farm. We don’t get to do that quite as much here, but I still feel like in my backyard there is a sense that I’m kind of in Nashville again.
The plus is the lagoon-style pool and the many lounge chairs that recall the spa area of a luxury hotel.
