The wait is over, from January 18th, Skam Italia returns to Netflix with its sixth season. The teen drama written by Ludovico Bessegato, Alice Urciuolo, and Elisa Zagaria arrives on the streaming platform with many familiar faces from previous episodes and a new protagonist, Asia, around whom the plot will revolve, promising, as always, an intense and sincere portrayal of the vulnerabilities associated with adolescence (and more). When does Skam 6 come out, and how many episodes are there?

The cult series produced by Rosario and Maddalena Rinaldo for Cross Productions landed on Netflix on January 18, 2024, with 10 new episodes starting six months after the events of the previous season. The first episode opens with Asia wanting to visit her boyfriend Ben for Easter, who is spending the year abroad in Cincinnati, USA. The difficulty of maintaining a long-distance relationship and the parents' focus on Fiamma, the tennis champion sister, will make her feel increasingly lonely, revealing problems and themes that will be developed in the subsequent episodes.

Where were we?

Skam originated in 2015 as a Norwegian series, later adapted for television in France, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, the USA, and in our country. Starting as a remake, Skam Italia began to tell original stories compared to the original, starting with season 5 and Elia's story. Despite being handsome, likable, intelligent, and popular, Elia couldn't maintain a steady relationship. Some labeled him as the typical Latin lover, his friends thought he was unable to admit his latent homosexuality, but his problem lay in discomfort about the size of his own penis. The character played by Francesco Centorame introduced a conversation about the conception of masculinity linked to the size of the male member, the stigma often associated with penile hypoplasia, and the fear of not being enough.

The plot of Skam Italia 6

Skam Italia 6 revolves around Asia Giovannelli, a charismatic and determined girl facing significant challenges, especially with herself and her vulnerabilities. Essential for facing them will be her friendship with other members of the Rebelde group, Viola (Lea Gavino), Fiore (Benedetta Santibelli), and Rebecca (Maria Camilla Brandenburg). All of this will intertwine with other characters, especially Giulio's (Andrea Palma) role, a boy who will make Asia's heart beat faster.

Asia, the new protagonist, and the theme of EDs

If in the fifth season the protagonist, Elia, contributed to dismantling the stigma around penis size and male insecurity, Skam Italia 6 addresses the theme of eating disorders. Almost simultaneously with the announcement that the Meloni government has planned a cut of 25 million euros from the National Fund to combat nutrition and eating disorders, the series sheds light on EDs, reminding us how they are a true social and health emergency. At this moment, there are three million people undergoing treatment in Italy for these disorders, and in 2022, there were 3158 deaths related to diagnoses. These are alarming numbers that cannot be ignored. And Skam Italia has decided not to ignore them. It will discuss them through Asia, showing us, episode after episode, how her relationship with food and her mental and physical health become more precarious, involving binge eating, calorie counting, excessive exercise, and increasingly evident symptoms for those around her that something is wrong.

Skam Italia fans have already met Asia in the fifth season, where she was one of the girls in the Rebelde group, along with Fiore, Rebecca, and Viola, who in those episodes was Elia's new love interest. Asia was the student representative who balanced political commitment against new neo-fascist representatives and love, a long-distance relationship with Ben. Nicole Rossi still portrays her, an influencer with over 450 thousand followers on Instagram, also known for participating in Il Collegio and Pechino Express.

Who returns and who joins the cast in the new episodes

Asia, the character played by Nicole Rossi, will be the focal point of Skam Italia 6, but the episodes will also feature beloved faces from the series such as Francesco Centorame aka Elia and Lea Gavino aka Viola. Maria Camilla Brandenburg (Rebecca), Benedetta Santibelli (Fiorella), Cosimo Longo (Jorge), Yothin Clavenzani (Munny), Beatrice Bruschi (Sana), Federico Cesari (Martino), Rocco Fasano (Niccolò), Martina Lelio (Federica), Ludovica Martino (Eva), Greta Ragusa (Silvia), Pietro Turano (Filippo), and Nicholas Zerbini (Luchino) will also make a return.
