The prequel to "Legally Blonde" is coming
Reese Witherspoon's most iconic character will star in a TV series
May 15th, 2024
Before Barbie, Elle Woods was the most pink-addicted girl on the big screen. Now, the delightful lawyer is about to return with her monochromatic suits, golden hair, and her Chihuahua, Bruiser, on a leash. The announcement was made by Reese Witherspoon, her portrayer in Legally Blonde and Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, during the Amazon Upfronts in New York, an event where the platform presents its new releases to advertisers: there will be a prequel series focused on Elle Woods' high school years.
The plot of the Legally Blonde prequel series
The project, titled Elle, which reportedly began filming in April, will follow Elle Woods in high school, a few years before the young student decided to enroll at Harvard University to study law and prove to her ex-boyfriend that she is not the stereotype of the beautiful, blonde, brainless girl. Episode by episode, we will discover how Elle became the determined and cheerful aspiring lawyer we grew to love in the 2001 film directed by Robert Luketic and its 2003 sequel.
Reese Witherspoon will produce the series
Reese Witherspoon will be the executive producer of Elle with her Hello Sunshine, along with Amazon MGM Studios, Lauren Neustadter and Lauren Kisilevsky (also part of the Hello Sunshine team), the series creator and showrunner Laura Kittrell, and Marc Platt, producer of the two franchise films. Speaking about the series, the actress said: "I truly couldn’t be more excited about this series! Fans will learn how Elle Woods navigated her world as a teenager with her distinct personality and ingenuity, in ways that only our beloved Elle could do. What could be better than that? I’m extremely grateful to the incredible teams at Prime Video and Hello Sunshine - along with our amazing writer Laura Kittrell - for making this dream of mine come true. Legally Blonde is back!".
What do we know (so far) about the Elle TV series?
Information about the series is currently scarce. The cast is top secret and we don't know yet who will play the young Elle in her teenage years. As mentioned before, Reese Witherspoon will not act in it, but she will be involved in the series as an executive producer through her production company Hello Sunshine. Among the executive producers is also Laura Kittrell, known for High School and Insecure, who is the creator and showrunner of the series. Additionally, from Witherspoon's words, it is hinted that Elle might arrive on Prime next year. The actress, announcing the project, wrote on Instagram: "Before becoming the most famous Gemini vegetarian to graduate from Harvard Law School, she was just a regular high school student in the '90s. And you will all meet her next year on Prime Video. I AM SO EXCITED!".
Reese Witherspoon's total pink look
To announce the series, Reese Witherspoon transformed back into Elle Woods and donned a total pink look. The actress chose a tweed skirt suit by Dolce & Gabbana, paired with nude-tone slingbacks by Christian Louboutin and gold jewelry by Anita Ko and Marie Lichtenberg. The cute detail? The Chihuahua, a nod to Bruiser, Elle's four-legged friend. The manicure and makeup were also in shades of pink, with blush and candy-pink lipstick, while her hair was loose, slightly wavy, and very blonde.
The Amazon series is not the only project about Legally Blonde
According to Deadline, besides Elle, among Amazon's projects for Legally Blonde is a spin-off series under the direction of Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (both co-creators of Gossip Girl). Additionally, for several years there has been talk of Legally Blonde 3, a film that appears to be happening with Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods and will also feature Jennifer Coolidge.
