Vivian Jenna Wilson is not just Elon Musk's daughter Everything we know about the 20-year-old, from her nonrelationship with her father to her journey of transition and emancipation

Vivian Jenna Wilson is a young woman with long blonde hair who loves reading, RuPaul’s Drag Race, and Chappell Roan. She spends hours on Discord with her friends, is highly active on social media, and her TikTok videos garner millions of views. And yes, she is also the daughter of Elon Musk. Born on April 15, 2004, as Xavier Alexander Musk, she changed her name, renounced her father, and redefined her identity, distancing herself from an overwhelming family legacy. Hers is the story of someone who chose self-determination in a world where the name Musk is synonymous with power and wealth. Her decision symbolizes both rebellion and freedom—the freedom to define oneself beyond genetic or financial inheritance. By sharing her journey, Wilson sets an important example: even if your transphobic relatives are some of the richest and most powerful people in the world, you can still walk away and live your life on your own terms.

Who is Vivian Jenna Wilson?

Vivian Jenna Wilson was born to Elon Musk and Justine Wilson, a Canadian writer specializing in supernatural romance novels. The couple also had Nevada Alexander, who tragically passed away at just ten weeks old, as well as Griffin—Vivian’s twin—and triplets Kai, Saxon, and Damian. Vivian has multiple half-siblings but has no relationship with them. Apart from his children with Justine Wilson, the Tesla CEO has had four kids with Shivon Zilis, an executive at Neuralink, three with musician Grimes, and one with conservative influencer Ashley St. Clair. Speaking with Teen Vogue, the 20-year-old said, "I actually don’t know how many siblings I have if you count half-siblings. I don’t keep up with that part of the family because... I just don’t. Neither does my mom." She even found out about the birth of some of them through social media

Coming Out as Transgender in 2020

Wilson has come out twice in her life: first as gay in middle school and later as transgender at 16. In 2020, she made it public through an Instagram story with a simple message: "I’m trans. Pronouns she/he." Speaking about her decision, she admitted that continuing to hide would have led her down a "very destructive path." At 16, she wanted to begin treatment for severe gender dysphoria but, under California law, needed both parents’ consent. Her mother supported her, but her father did not. In 2020, Musk eventually relented but later claimed he had been deceived into giving his consent.

The Rift with Elon Musk

In June 2022, shortly after turning 18, Vivian filed a legal request to officially change her name and gender. She chose Vivian Jenna Wilson as a tribute to her mother, marking a clear break from Musk. She declared she no longer wanted to be associated with her father "in any way, shape, or form" and clarified that she was financially independent and had cut ties with him since her coming out. Musk quickly responded. In a July 2024 interview with The Daily Wire, he stated: "I lost my son Xavier. He was killed by the woke virus," blaming leftist ideology and radical anti-capitalist views for their estrangement. His biography by Walter Isaacson painted her as an angry, rebellious child consumed by extremist ideology, who hurt her father with reckless decisions. Vivian responded on Threads, explaining her father’s deeply transphobic stance: “My father hates that I’m trans because he chose my sex at birth. That expectation of masculinity that I had to fight my whole life was a monetary transaction. A monetary transaction. A MONETARY TRANSACTION! How is that legal?” Like some of her siblings, Vivian was conceived through in vitro fertilization with sex selection—a legal but controversial practice in the U.S. She later described Musk to NBC News as "absent and abusive," belittling her "femininity and queerness," and as cold, angry, insensitive, and narcissistic. She rejected theories that she radicalized Musk, arguing he had always been conservative and right-wing.

Public Attention and Moving to Japan

Though she had never spoken publicly about Musk before, her attempt to distance herself from him brought her into the public eye. Her social media content racks up views, as does her decision to move to Japan to study languages. "I don’t see my future in the United States. Even if Trump only had one term, even if he didn’t implement all his anti-trans laws, there will always be the people who voted for him" she said, distancing herself from both Trump’s policies and her father’s unwavering support for the former president. She also recognizes that the U.S. is regressing on trans and LGBTQ+ rights, making it an unsafe place for people like her.

Trump’s Anti-Trans Policies and Vivian’s Concerns

Since taking office, Trump has signed executive orders banning transgender people from the military and from participating in women’s sports. Recently, a federal judge temporarily blocked another order restricting medical care for transgender youth under 19. As a trans person fighting for her rights, Vivian is deeply concerned: "As a trans woman, I am terrified of losing access to medical care. If I hadn’t transitioned at the age I did, I don’t know what would have happened" she said. "There’s so much cruelty around this, and I really want to raise awareness about how crucial trans healthcare is for minors, especially puberty blockers. Maybe it’s time to stop demonizing these literal children or the people who are just trying to help them feel comfortable in their own skin.”She added, “People don’t seem to realize that being trans is not a choice."

Vivian and Social Media: Advocacy and Awareness

Vivian believes that social media can be incredibly informative and useful in raising awareness about important issues, particularly those affecting queer individuals and marginalized communities. This is exactly what she aims to do with her platforms. She highlights the life-saving impact of medical care for young transgender people, while also reminding everyone that: "it’s not just trans people being affected by the current administration", but also "marginalized groups such as undocumented immigrants and people of color". She emphasizes: "I’m really trying to advocate more on that front, since the current administration has been like a wrecking ball in that regard."

Her Political Views and Social Justice Advocacy

In an interview with Teen Vogue, Vivian described herself as left-wing, outlining her strong beliefs in universal basic income, free healthcare, and the idea that food, housing, and water are human rights. She considers wealth inequality to be one of the biggest issues in the United States today, firmly believing that workers deserve fair wages and that wealth should not be hoarded by the ultra-rich 1%, who only serve their own interests.

Currently, Vivian is studying languages in Japan while continuing her life as a young woman actively fighting for trans rights and other social causes. She jokingly mentions exploring new possibilities, such as streaming on Twitch or pursuing a modeling career, but her ultimate dream is to participate in a reality show. It remains to be seen how her career will evolve, but one thing is certain: her advocacy and activism will continue to make an impact.
