Selena Gomez, please, pay someone to manage your Instagram profile

How much do we love following celebrities on social media? The less filtered and controlled they are, the more spontaneous their content, the more we enjoy it. Out of hate, love, or sheer curiosity, we love feeling connected to actors, singers, models, and everyone in between. We trick ourselves into believing we can know their lives and daily routines, convincing ourselves that we’re friends with them. After all, what’s the difference between Selena Gomez and our best friend if they both post frantically and then delete? Maybe, just maybe, we’re overdoing it. Perhaps, and I say perhaps, global superstars whose films are Oscar-nominated should, for example, discuss their social media strategy with professionals or even outsource their accounts to others, not only for practicality but also for effectiveness. Let me explain.
Selena Gomez vs. Senate Candidate Sam Parker
A few hours ago, Selena Gomez posted a video where she was crying desperately about Donald Trump’s new policies, which involve mass deportations of Mexican immigrants, their children, and families. She expressed her wish to do something to help them. This is a subject close to her heart, as she was born in Texas, and her father has Mexican roots. As expected, the video sparked a wave of reactions. Some admired her for showing empathy, while others criticized her as a privileged individual who, instead of crying on Instagram, should actually use her money and influence to help. The most notable (and not in a good way) reaction came from Senate candidate Sam Parker, who tweeted, "Deport Selena Gomez." In response, the singer wrote, "Apparently, showing empathy for people isn’t okay," followed by, "Thank you, Mr. Parker, for the laugh and the threat." And, as always, it all turned into a spectacle.

I’m not saying her display of empathy deserves punishment—far from it. What should be criticized, or at least adjusted and reconsidered, is deleting the video, posting a passive-aggressive story right afterward, and the impulsivity with which these contents are thrown online. Especially because they come from a prominent figure who’s in the spotlight, currently promoting Emilia Pérez. These actions are inevitably chewed up by public discourse, turned into a personal debate dissected on platforms like PopCrave. And so, the opportunity for meaningful reflection—which was entirely valid—gets lost in the noise.

Why Public Figures Should Leave Communication to Professionals
In a world where parasocial relationships are spiraling out of control, where everyone’s private life feels like public property, and even those who try to protect it are subject to criticism—in a world where every public figure, including content creators for some reason, is expected to comment knowledgeably on everything from the Palestinian genocide to climate change and U.S. domestic politics—perhaps it’s time to regulate impulsive messages. Show empathy with purpose and direction, present thoughtful reflections and opinions more effectively, and maybe throw in a generous donation. If this applies to Selena Gomez, it applies to everyone else too.
